Originally a Lenape gathering place called Aquetong, which means “many springs,” the settlers who tamed the dense woods later renamed the small town Carversville in honor of the town’s first postmaster. Loggers would float the logs from northern Pennsylvania down the Delaware, and haul them out of the water at a certain point near town, then transport into Philadelphia and other nearby towns. The extra traffic bolstered the town’s growth.

The Excelsior Normal Institute, established in 1850s was one of the first true public schools in Pennsylvania. Previously, the townspeople and local farmers had to either teach their children themselves or send them away to boarding schools. It became one of the premier schools in the area, teaching subjects like ancient and modern languages, music theory, and fine arts in addition to the usual primary education (math, history, writing). This building was unfortunately razed in mid-1900s.

Several historic buildings, however, still stand in Carversville,PA, with the closest large town being Doylestown, about eight miles southwest. Trenton, NJ sits around 20 miles to the southeast.

The Great Outdoors

When you rent a motorhome in Carversville, you likely will want to hit the outdoors. Hike, bike, climb, boat, tube, and fish. What more could an outdoorsman want? A collection of small parks line the banks of the Delaware River. All put together; there are around 1,000 acres of land (and significantly more on the Delaware side of the river, too). Tohickon Valley and Ralph State Parks are the largest two parks out of the bunch. The Tohickon (To-hick-han) Creek is thought to be the cleanest water in the state. Though traveling the creek in a small boat is possible, during the drier, hotter months, the creek can get very low, requiring you to wade several times to get to deeper waters. Be careful when exploring the rocky outcroppings along the banks of the creek; copperhead snakes are often found there.

Hankering for a larger park with more elbow room? Nockamixon State Park, a few miles north, is one of the largest parks in the area. With over 10,000 acres for adventurers to explore, there are well over 30 miles of multi-use trails, horses included. The Nockamixon Lake, which stretches along the entire valley, is stocked with smallmouth, largemouth, and hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, and more. If you don’t own fishing gear, the park will get you started on your fishing adventure with a loaner rod. This park has plenty of parking for trailers and motorhomes. Bring your RV rental and go adventuring!

RV Parks

The campgrounds also has a heated pool, a catch-and-release fishing pond, outdoor movies, and regular planned activities.

Deer Woods Campgrounds in Pipersville, run by Bucks County, is a barebone campgrounds, offering only a dump site and restroom facilities. Two things to be aware of: all motorhomes must be under 25 feet, and camper trailers must be under 18 feet. Pets are prohibited, also.
