In Mussey Township, the village of Capac is one of the most pleasant places to visit in all of Michigan. It’s a small town, yet Capac has the spirit and charm of a much larger destination. Capac was named for Huyana Capac, a great Incan ruler in South America after the village was founded in 1857.

Capac is 40 miles east of Flint, and 50 miles north of Detroit. It is an ideal place to rent an RV due to its convenient location close to both metropolitan areas and the vast wilderness to the north. Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, is not far either when you book an RV in Capac, so summertime heat is a pleasure to beat by heading to the beach.

Discover Capac

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Capac doesn’t have many parks, so in order to find some great places to unwind and enjoy the great outdoors, it will take some driving in your Capac camper rental to find it. Stony Creek Metropark is a great location on the outskirts of Detroit, with over 4,000 acres of forested hills and rocky slopes. An extensive network of trails carry visitors to the top of the park’s highest point, where all of downtown Detroit can be seen over 26 miles away. Sledding, snowboarding, skiing, and skating on the pond make the park enjoyable even in wintertime, while the golf course, swimming areas, and beaches solidify it as one of the best park getaways in this urban area.

Orion Oaks County Park and Bald Mountain State Recreation Area can both be found by driving to the southwest in your Capac motorhome rental. Orion Oaks County Park includes Lake Orion, a great fishing and boating area, and lots of hiking and biking trails weaving through the woods. Bald Mountain State Recreation Area is a popular weekend trip for people in Detroit who want to canoe, kayak, fish, and hunt. Out past Pontiac, Indian Springs Metropark and Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area continue to attract lots of campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Hundreds of trails are ready to discover at Pontiac Lake, where horseback riding is popular and guests can even rent a horse to explore the park.

Lakeport State Park is a nice change of scenery, with epic views of the sunrise over the majestic waters of Lake Huron. There are a variety of different beaches, picnic areas, a camp store, and two campgrounds for you and your Capac RV rental by owner. Sleeper State Park and Point Crescent State Park are on the northern tip of Michigan’s “thumb”, and are other alternatives for beachside camping and relaxation. The Huron-Manistee National Forests are farther away but still easy to find when you rent an RV in Capac. Birdwatching and wildlife photography are two main reasons why people enjoy this incredible wilderness area, where old-growth pine forests meet lakeside dune areas to create unique ecosystems. Hiawatha National Forest is on the upper peninsula and worth the drive despite its distance. Six amazing wilderness areas comprise the 900,000-acre forest.

City Attractions

Capac is a wonderful, charming, old town, though it doesn’t have many attractions of its own. The Capac Historical Society Museum is one of the only noteworthy sites located in Capac but it is an amazing place to learn about the complex history of Mussey Township and Capac. Newspaper clippings, photos, artifacts, and a huge replica model city built 100 years ago can be seen on site.

If you head to Detroit, you will certainly have more luck finding exciting things to do. The city has worked to create beautiful cityscapes to attract businesses. Cafes, restaurants, breweries, boutiques, you name it: Detroit is quickly becoming one of the best cities to visit. The Detroit Historical Museum is an awesome institution where much of Detroit's past is explained through guided tours. The Motown Museum celebrates one of the greatest periods and styles of soul music that “Motor City” was made famous from. Detroit Institute of Arts is wonderful for all art lovers, with over 60,000 original masterpieces on display. There are infinite other things to do in Detroit.

Where to Park It

The village of Capac might not have too many attractions, but it has lots of potential as a premier outdoors hub for wilderness lovers and recreation seekers. There are loads of places to stay and park overnight with your rental near Capac, so you can rest easy after booking your RV.
