Cañon City is the most populated city in Fremont County, and is also the county seat. Search for an RV in Fremont County to begin exploring Cañon City and the state of Colorado. Cañon City's nickname is “Climate Capital of Colorado”; originally named Canon City, it was renamed in 1994 when the U.S. Board on Geographic Names approved adding the tilde (~) to make it Cañon City. It is the only city in the United States (outside of New Mexico) to have a tilde in its name.

Like much of Colorado, Cañon City is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts with activities such as whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Less enthusiastic outdoor buffs still flock here for the sightseeing and photographic possibilities, both within Cañon City and farther out. Other nearby towns and cities worth having a look at include (but are not limited to) Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Alamosa, La Junta and Denver. Having your Cañon City RV rental on site would be helpful if you decide to collect samples of the local shale, or even some minerals which can be spotted during your hikes.

There are 11 city-owned parks in Cañon City, including Veterans Park which is the preferred venue for the concert series “Entertainment in the Park” which take place during the summer. Park your best RV rental in Cañon City within earshot of Veterans Park and you might be able to enjoy the concerts without having to fight the crowds.

Transportation within the city and slightly farther out is handled by taxis, shuttle buses, and a downtown wagon ride. Transportation to parks and venues farther out is handled by jeep tours and Segway tours. As exciting as the idea may seem at first, taking your Cañon City luxury RV rental along for the ride is probably not a good idea, as the roads can be steep and rough.

Discover Cañon City

The Great Outdoors

Cañon City is centrally located to several mountain ranges and forests; if there is any problem here, it is that there is too much to choose from.  A guest could easily stay here for more than a week or two, and still not see everything. Those who seek elevation, for photo ops or just for themselves, can choose between Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, both near Colorado Springs, or Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Elbert, Mt. Harvard or Mt. Antero. These are more difficult hikes, Mt. Harvard reportedly being the hardest, and walking sticks are recommended. There are also lesser and easier peaks nearby, for hikers who might find these hikes too difficult. The mountains and peaks can be reached by car; the hikes begin from the parking lots.

There are also a large number of parks that offer easier, more level hiking, such as Temple Canyon Park and Red Canyon Park. Whitewater rafting can be found in Bighorn Sheep Canyon and the Royal Gorge; the scenery from the raft is every bit as thrilling as from the peaks, and rafters should be prepared to paddle their hearts out. Canoeing and kayaking can be found, as well as ATV and off-road tours. Once your hands have stopped shaking, sit down and relax with a wine tasting at a local winery, or take a helicopter tour of the area, if you still haven't had enough. There are coach bus tours of the area as well, for those who wish to relax while taking in the scenery.

RV Parks

Two of the RV resorts near Cañon City worth considering are Mountain View RV Resort and Royal Gorge / Cañon City KOA. Mountain View is family owned and operated; it has concrete pads with picnic tables and a fire pit, a laundry room and playground. It is close to some nearby attractions including the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, rafting, zip lining, fishing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding, photography excursions and more.

Royal Gorge is open all year round. It has a recreation area with go-karts, mini golf and a giant slide, a cafe serving breakfast, sandwiches, cold snacks, and pizza; it also has a shuttle bus to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Royal Gorge Route Railroad, nearby hiking, ATV and horseback riding trails, and a dog park.

Closer to Coaldale, you will find the Bighorn Park Campground & RV Resort. The sites here are shaded, level and easy access; they have picnic tables, 20/30/50 amp, water, and electricity, are pull through and have enough room for slide-outs on both sides. Some sites have sewer hookups but not all of them. The resort also has a swimming pool and volleyball court.

Near Pueblo, Haggard's RV Campground has full hookups, gravel pads and pull throughs, restrooms, and showers. WiFi is available; there are no weekly or monthly rates with discounts, only daily rates.

Exploring The City

There are several museums and one artists' gallery; one of the museums focuses on Colorado prisons, which is definitely unique and memorable. It shows the prisons' histories and the inmates' living conditions over the decades, from approximately 1930 to present day. The tour takes roughly an hour to 90 minutes and includes samples of some artwork completed by inmates that is quite well done.

Those who plan to stay in Cañon City for a few days should check out the Fremont Center for the Arts, which has continuously changing art shows and offers classes in some art forms. Red Herring Productions offers interactive murder mystery theater, and gets very good reviews. Play your cards right and maybe your Cañon City motorhome rental could become a fictional murder scene.

When your appetite finally hits, there is a good selection of cuisines, from steak to Chinese, Italian and French bakery, from moderately priced to cheap eats. There are grocery stores and supermarkets if you would prefer a quiet home cooked meal, prepared in your Cañon City travel trailer rental.
