The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in California, MD, and make the short drive north to the Greenwell State Park, which lies along the west bank of the Patuxent River. It encompasses the historic Rosedale Manor House and the adjacent Bonds-Simms tobacco barns, with the 166-acre farm of John Phillip Greenwell, Jr. and his sister, Mary Wallace Greenwell, donated to the state in 1971. Follow one of the numerous hiking and horseback riding trails or enjoy fishing, swimming, and canoeing in the Patuxent River.

Directly south of California sprawls St. Mary's State Park, which is divided into two sections linked by a narrow nature corridor. Head to St. Mary’s Lake to go fishing, boating, and canoeing, or explore the hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails that surround this sparkling body of water. The 2,200-acre park that lies to the north is largely undeveloped, with St. Mary’s River meandering through its heart.

A 15-minute drive east of California takes you to the Calvert Cliffs State Park, which protects an impressive stretch of cliffs that extend for 24 miles along the Chesapeake Bay. It’s renowned as a fossil hunting destination, with predominantly Middle Miocene fossils scattering the shore and giant fossil shark teeth a prized find. Explore some of the 13 miles of mostly forested hiking trails or stroll along the sandy beach while keeping an eye out for the more than 150 species of birds that have been observed in the park.
