The city of Burlington is located in Alamance County halfway between the larger cities of Greensboro to the west and Durham to the east. Just a little further east you will also find Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina and home to many universities and colleges.

Burlington came into existence as a maintenance depot for the North Carolina Railroad in the 1850s. At that time it was called Company Shops, reflecting the fact it was the railroad workshops location, but changed to Burlington, NC when the railroad offices closed down.

The Great Outdoors

Drive your RV rental just a few miles south of the city to Uwharrie National Forest which covers around 51,000 acres. There are several trails marked through the forest, perfect for hiking. Falls Lake State Recreation Area was created in 1981 with the completion of the Neuse River Dam. The lake covers some 12,000 acres and offers a wide range of activities both on and off the water. Exploring the City

The city has many areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Burlington Historical District is one of them. It contains an impressive selection of 20th-century residential buildings in traditional Victorian and American architectural styles. The city council provides a self-guided walking tour that you can download.

Burlington is home to a restored carousel that was originally built by the Dentzel Carousel Company around 1910. The carousel features 46 hand-carved animals that are very realistic, a trademark of the Dentzel carvers, including glass eyes and real horse hair tails. The carousel is open to the public but due to its age is sometimes closed for restoration.

Just south of the city you will come to Alamance Battleground and Museum, only a few miles drive in your camper rental from Burlington, on the site of the first armed resistance to British rule. The battle took place on 16th May 1771 between troops of Royal Governor Tryon and “Regulators” objecting to the British taxation. The battleground has been restored, and a museum opened on the site.
