Known as the “Trout Capital of the World,” Buhl is a small city along the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway that extends from Twin Falls to Bliss. It was founded in 1906 and named after investor Frank H. Buhl, with numerous hatcheries surrounding the city where huge quantities of rainbow trout are produced.

Buhl’s proximity to the Snake River and its natural wonders make it an ideal place to rent an RV in southern Idaho. It’s well-served by family-friendly RV campgrounds and just a stone’s throw from the cultural attractions and services of Twin Falls.

Discover Buhl

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Buhl and make the short drive north to the Niagara Springs State Park where glacial waters cascade into the 350-foot-deep Snake River Canyon. There’s year-round fishing available in the Crystal Springs Lake and good birdwatching along the shores. The park forms part of the Thousand Springs complex along the Snake River (which are all within a short drive of one another), including Crystal Springs, the Malad Gorge and the Earl M. Hardy Box Canyon Springs Nature Preserve.

To the west of Buhl is the Bruneau Dunes State Park, a 4,800-acre protected area that is home to the highest single-structured sand dune in North America. It’s a popular destination for sandboarding, horseback riding, and fishing, with bass and bluegill both for the taking in the park’s small lake. Stop in at the educational center to explore the natural history displays, then take advantage of the telescope at the Bruneau Dunes Observatory for an evening of stargazing.

A short drive northeast of Buhl is the Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve, a U.S. National Monument that protects a volcanic landscape and one of the best-preserved flood basalt areas in the country. It encompasses three major lava fields where some of the world’s most impressive examples of open rift cracks can be seen, as well as a large area of sagebrush steppe grasslands. Stop in at the visitor center where the preserve’s geology is showcased, then follow one of the hiking trails to witness the lava flows, cinder cones, and lava tube caves.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Buhl and head to the Buhl Chamber of Commerce RV Park, which is situated on the eastern edge of town. All of the RV sites are pull-throughs and include water and power, with additional vehicle parking available on site.

Alternatively, make the 15-minute drive north to the Miracle & Banbury Hot Springs where you’ll find 10 RV sites along the edge of the Salmon Falls Creek. Each site offers 30 amp electricity and water hookups, with grassy areas, fire rings, and picnic tables.

A 15-minute drive east will take you to the Twin Falls 93 RV Park, which offers long pull-through sites, full hookups, and Wi-Fi. There’s video surveillance throughout this pet-friendly park for your security, as well as large grassy areas, picnic areas, and an on-site laundry facility.

You can also make the 15-minute drive into Twin Falls where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Buhl and stroll through the city, stopping to admire the red-brick Masonic Lodge Building and the Old Save Mor Building. A short drive east will take you to the Art and Frieda Maxwell Barn, a historic residence that was built by German-Russian immigrant Henry Schick in 1915. It’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a short walk from the charming Rudolf Kunze Barn that was built in the same year.

Buhl makes an ideal base for exploring Twin Falls, which is the gateway to Snake River Canyon and its spectacular Shoshone Falls (one of the largest waterfalls in the United States). Follow the rim trail that leads to the immense Perrine Bridge, which is one of the largest arch bridges in the United States and a popular BASE jumping location. Soak up the panoramic views across the Snake River Canyon, then stay to watch the incredible sunsets that take place here.

If you’re traveling with kids, spend an afternoon at the Herrett Center for Arts and Science, a family-friendly museum on the campus of the College of Southern Idaho. Browse the engaging exhibits about the region’s natural history, including a replica of the Huntington Canyon Mammoth that was unearthed in Utah. Browse the works on display at the Jean B. King Gallery of Art and watch a show at the Earl & Hazel Faulkner Planetarium - the largest of its kind in Idaho.

Buhl is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can pick up grocery supplies, as well as a handful of fast food eateries and restaurants for dining out. There are also numerous gas stations if you want to fill up your motorhome rental in Buhl.

Whether you’re visiting Twin Falls County for its family-friendly museums or natural wonders, book an RV in Buhl and start exploring.
