Buchanan is a small city in Haralson County, Georgia, located between Atlanta and Birmingham. The settlement was first established in 1856 and was named after President James Buchanan, who had recently been elected, although in the local accent the town name is pronounced Buck-han-uhn.

The city is situated at an elevation of 1,200 feet amid the rolling hills of north-west Georgia, with the mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Nantahala National Forest laying to the north-east.

When you book an RV in Buchanan, the beautiful north-west of Georgia with lakes, forests, and mountains are easily accessible, making this area a great place for your next outdoor adventure.

The Great Outdoors

just a short drive west from Buchanan in your RV rental is the Talladega National Forest. Covering an area of over 390,000 acres, this vast forest of eastern Alabama is at the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountains. A wide variety of wildlife can be found in the forest, including coyote, black bear, and white-tailed deer, along with many species of birds. Some of the wildlife, such as gopher tortoise and flattened-musk turtle are endangered, so the habitat is protected to encourage those species. The forest offers a range of recreational activities, including hiking and cycling, plus there’s fishing and canoeing on the numerous lakes within the forest.

Drive a little way northeast in your motorhome rental from Buchanan to the Red Top Mountain State Park. This beautiful area is surrounded by lakes and is great for anyone that enjoys outdoor pursuits. Along with campground facilities for a few RVs, the park has nine marked trails for all abilities, picnic areas, restrooms, and a visitor center. The park Rangers run regular events including archery lessons and guided tours, plus there are annual events such as the Mountain Music series in May through July.

On the outskirts of Atlanta, you’ll find Sweetwater Creek State Park is easily accessed in your RV rental from Buchanan. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people, and the visitor center contains artifacts belonging to them and exhibits explaining the history of the area. The visitor center itself is interesting as it has been built in a sustainable way, reducing its need for electricity and using the sun for energy to lessen its impact on the area. You will find around nine miles of hiking trails, canoe and boat rental, and picnic areas all within the park.

RV Parks

Less than a five miles drive in your Buchanan motorhome rental is the Golden River RV Park. Located in a secluded wooded area on a ridge above the Tallapoosa River, this small, intimate campground could be perfect for small families. Each campsite has full hookups, including water, electricity, and sewerage, plus picnic tables and fire rings. On-site is a large washroom which also includes laundry facilities. This is a basic site without large facilities, but perfect for anyone seeking peace and quiet.

In complete contrast to the Golden River RV Park, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Bremen-Atlanta is a true holiday resort. The majority of the campsites are pull-thru for easy access; all have full hookup and picnic facilities. On-site, the large swimming pool, splash pool, and water park will keep the kids, old and young, entertained for hours. When you’re tired of the water, try out the mini-golf, playgrounds, arcades, train rides, and much more. There are even alligator and tortoise display areas, an outdoor cinema and a dog park for your four-legged friends. Bring your luxury RV rental from Buchanan here for a great family vacation.

Exploring the City

You will find all the basic requirements in Buchanan, such as a gas station and stores, plus a small range of dining options. For greater choice, the larger town of Bremen has a Walmart that may also allow you to park your RV overnight. Just check with the store manager in advance. Just to the west of town is Lake Olympia, which offers fishing for bass and crappie, plus a boat ramp for canoes, kayaks and small sailing dinghies.

Located in the town outskirts is the West Georgia Museum of Tallapoosa. This interesting museum takes a look back at 1800s life in Georgia, with replica stores, barber shops, and a bank, but also looks further in the past. You’ll be surprised to see a group of dinosaurs as you enter the museum, including a 30 foot T-Rex! Slightly more up to date is the restored 1923 Ford Peddlers Wagon and a horse-drawn buggy.

In Bremen, the Rocky Branch Ghost Town is sure to be a hit with the kids. Along with hayrides through “Dead Woods," there is a ghost mine and a “ghoulish trail." The site has been regularly used as a film location and events are held throughout the year, including cowboy shows. A great day out for the kids!
