In the 1820s, a wealthy Texan landowner, Stephen F. Austin launched a program to bring in new settlers who would help tame the Texas wilderness. Called the Old Three Hundred, the land was sold to one such pioneer, John Austin (no relation to Stephen F. Austin). John, who was from Connecticut, built a cotton gin and co-owned a general store with his brother, James. Once the two businesses were up and running, other colonists and settlers flocked to the town. John Austin and his children took ill with cholera, and all perished in 1833. The sole survivor, his wife, sold half of the land to John and Augustus Allen for their settlement, and that town later became Houston.

Brazoria was nearly lost during the Runaway Scrape in 1835-1836, in which the Mexican Army advanced into the Texas territory after their success at the Alamo, forcing the pioneers to flee. The Mexican Army destroyed several towns and executed several soldiers and civilians during their incursion. Sam Houston and his fledgling army eventually beat them back, and in doing so, forced the Treaty of Velasco to be signed. Many refugees returned to find their homes in ruins.

Today, Brazoria, TX, is a quiet town with a mix of farmers and fishermen. A mere 15 miles to the coast, it’s also just under 60 miles to the heart of Houston. The easy access to both destinations makes this city an ideal place to search for an RV and start your outdoor adventure.

Discover Brazoria

The Great Outdoors

Booking an RV in Brazoria, TX, allows for the opportunity to find spontaneous adventures and explore the outdoors without having to cope with the downsides like bugs and leaky tents. Nature lovers, birders, and photographers will feel like they’ve hit the jackpot at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge (NWF). The unique mix of habitats, from saltwater marshes to coastal plains, means there are hundreds of different birds, all suited for different environments. In one breath, one might spot a bird normally found in deep woods, and in the next, a sea bird. Roseate spoonbills, which were endangered in the 1980s, have rebounded, and they are frequently spotted lingering along the beaches. Many other wildlife, alligators, and bobcats included, reside in this park. Hikers should exercise caution when embarking on the trails and boardwalks.

A few short miles to the west, smaller, but no less endearing parks, Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, have similar variety in their terrain. Avian wildlife too is varied and abundant. What sets these two parks apart, though, is the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles often chooses to make their nests (lay eggs) there. Small, shallow lakes line the coast just past the first range of sand dunes. Many of these lakes and ponds allow bankside and boat-fishing. Crabbing is also allowed, though a few lakes have restrictions. Although camping isn’t allowed, there are several private campgrounds that can accommodate a Brazoria rental RV.

RV Parks

Don’t forget to figure out where you’ll park an RV rental overnight while you sack out. In this part of Texas, there are plenty of options. Brazoria Lakes RV Resort is conveniently close and includes several amenities like high-speed wifi, gym, and “professional” laundry facilities.

Alternatively, Jamaica Beach RV Park in Galveston maybe a fun candidate. Just a few hundred feet from the closest public beach, the campground offers the standard fare: 30/50 amps hookups, WiFi, pull-thru sites, and concrete pads. It also has a 700-foot lazy river, an infinity hot tub for the adults, and a “walk-in” movie theater.

Exploring the CIty

A luxury RV rental makes it easy to get around the various coastal sights and activities, and the air conditioning is always a plus on a hot, humid day. All along the coast from Galveston Island to Freeport, there are boat tour agencies and charter boat agencies. Dolphin tours are extremely popular. In addition to bottlenose dolphins, which are abundant, the bay is also home to large turtles like the leatherback sea turtle, and several species of sharks.

Step back into time to the Jurassic era in Angleton, TX. The Crocodile Encounter prides itself on giving the visitors a unique, hands-on experience with its reptiles, amphibians, and exotic mammals like bongo antelopes. One of the closest living relatives to long-gone dinosaurs, interacting with crocodiles gives the visitors a unique glimpse into Earth’s history.

Continue the tour of Earth’s ancient past at Wilderness Golf Course in Lake Jackson. The perimeter of the fairways is seemingly wild and raw -- by design. Golfers won’t see condos and residential homes anywhere near the course, which contributes to the illusion. Consistently rated one of the top-5 courses in Texas, the Wilderness is also a designated Audubon Sanctuary. Although the facility is open to the public, guests should be aware that there is a minimum dress code.

This corner of Texas provides something for everyone: adventure, fun, and relaxation. Rent a motorhome in Brazoria, TX, and make new memories to last a lifetime.
