Boothbay is an idyllic little town in Maine’s Midcoast region that is popular with New England’s summer vacation crowds. Formed in the 1600s as a British fishing station, it was incorporated into a real town a century later as one of the region’s most productive fisheries, feeding the Pilgrims and America’s early colonists.

While once nothing more than a tiny village, it’s grown into a tourist hot spot for those looking to escape the summer heat and humidity of Boston and New York City. It’s also not far from the state’s most populous city and trendy destination of Portland. Its motto, “Perfectly Maine” sums it up quite succinctly; getting a travel trailer rental in Boothbay is one of the best ways to experience the seaside oasis, allowing you to comfortably camp, peruse its many shops, and delight in its amazing cuisine at your leisure.

The Great Outdoors

Vacationing in Maine is all about enjoying the beauty of nature, whether it’s a lobster dinner at a café on the water or kayaking around the hundreds of islands that dot the coast. If you don’t feel like venturing too far from the town’s main streets, check out the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. The 300-acre facility is a sprawling network of trails that passes splendid waterfalls, intricate stonework, and colorful ornamental plantings.

Maine is all about being out on the water though, and one of the ways to do it is by taking a tour to nearby Cabbage Island. The boat ride out along with an explanation of the island’s history really immerses you in the nautical culture of the state, but the real kicker is the lobster bake and blueberry cake available on the island.

Serious backcountry adventurers will have no trouble finding fun activities to do when they get a camper rental in Boothbay though. Just rent a sea kayak at one of the area’s sporting goods stores and set out to one of the nearby picturesque islands. The state has recognized the coastline as a section of the Maine Island Trail, a network of public and private campgrounds to accommodate kayakers on multi-day adventures, so you’ll always have a place to sleep.

RV Parks

While there aren’t too many dedicated RV parks in the Boothbay area, there are dozens of small campgrounds; one of the closest is Shore Hills Campground just north of town. Their sites include full hookups for your motorhome rental from Boothbay, laundry facilities, showers, access to a dump station, and picnic tables. If you want to stay near all the attractions in Boothbay, this is one of the best places to consider parking the rig.

One of the other options nearby is Grey Homestead Ocean Campground near the town of Southport. As the name suggests, it’s an oceanfront campground, and one of the only ones in the Boothbay area. Their sites have full hookups for your Boothbay RV rental, showers, laundry facilities, a swimming area, and kayaks for rent. It’s the postcard-ready campground for your Maine vacation.

If you’d prefer a little more privacy and some distance from the city when you rent an RV in Boothbay, consider staying at Sherwood Forest Campsite and Cabins near the town of New Harbor. It’s on the next peninsula over from Boothbay, which makes for a bit of a drive to visit the area’s attractions, but it will be much quieter, and sites are less likely to fill up in the peak summer months. Amenities at Sherwood Forest include electrical hookups, a dump station, and showers.

Exploring the City

When you book an RV in Boothbay, you’ll have access to a wealth of amazing attractions; the only problem will be how to fit it all into your schedule. A great place to start is by taking a tour of some of the region's most famous lighthouses. Both Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol and Burnt Island Lighthouse off the coast of Boothbay are picturesque and well worth a tour.

However, if you’re an aquatic enthusiast, you’ll also want to stop by the Maine State Aquarium, which is right on Boothbay Harbor. It’s fairly small compared to its cousin in Boston, but it specializes in wildlife native to the Gulf of Maine and is one of the best places to learn about this unique ecosystem. There’s also a wonderful picnic area outside its doors, so bring a lunch and enjoy the warm summer weather.

If you’d like to see what Maine was like back in its heyday as a vacation destination, make a visit to the Boothbay Railway Village. It’s chock-full of memorabilia from the 1850s through the 1960s, including vintage cars, motorcycles, and, of course, a steam engine – the most common mode of travel in New England before the invention of the automobile. Speaking of which, you can even take a ride in an old Ford Model T.
