This small town is found in Idaho's sparsely populated, northern panhandle. It is located only 30 miles south of the Canadian border. Sandpoint, Idaho is the nearest larger town and lies around 30 miles to the south. To reach the first real city, you have to travel over 100 miles to the southwest, to Spokane, Washington.

The town lies on the banks of the Kootenay River.
