The reclusive coastal community of Bolinas is only a half hour's north of San Francisco in stunning Northern California. All signs directing traffic towards Bolinas from Highway 1 have been taken down, making the village only accessible by unmarked roads. The town of Bolinas seeks to keep the town small, intimate, and undeveloped.
Bolinas along with the neighboring Stinson Beach community once comprised the Rancho Las Baulines, a land grant given by the Mexican government. The town’s name was inspired by the land grant, although the spellings are not the same. Bolinas has been continuously occupied since the mid 19th century and has remained as vibrant and lovely as ever. The streets are lined with historic buildings and the town is surrounded on all sides by nature reserves, parks, and ocean, making it a fabulous place to rent an RV.

Muir Woods National Monument combines with Mount Tamalpais State Park to form a larger natural area. The monument takes its name from John Muir, the man who first lobbied the government to create national parks in an effort to preserve nature and ensure there is ample space for people to enjoy outdoor recreation. The only thing missing from this incredible nature area is a campground but this shouldn’t discourage you from bringing your Bolinas camper rental to check out the ancient redwood trees at the national monument.
Directly north of Bolinas is Point Reyes National Seashore, a phenomenal coastal wilderness area that has long been a staple of the San Francisco area. Around two and a half million people seek out the lush forests and pristine beaches at Point Reyes. You can hike a series of trails through the woods and on the rocky bluffs that watchfully overlook the ocean below. Hidden waterfalls cascade from the coastal cliffs and entice people into exploring more and more of the park. Several campgrounds are accommodating of walking and equestrian campers, but only one or two can provide you a place to stay when you rent an RV in Bolinas.
