Widely considered to be a suburb of Asheville, Black Mountain is an enchanting mountain town named for the Black Mountain Range in western Northern Carolina. Black Mountain was once home to the Cherokee native people before European settlers moved westward claiming the land for themselves.

Today, Black Mountain benefits from its proximity to Asheville, as well as its location adjacent to the Appalachian Mountains which are a hotspot for tourism, especially in the warmer months. The downtown area is full of eclectic and exciting shops, cultural museums, beautiful old buildings, and mouthwatering restaurants. Interstate 40 conveniently runs through Black Mountain, making it an easy place to reach, as well as a fantastic place to find and rent an RV.

Discover Black Mountain

Explore the Outdoors

When you book an RV in Black Mountain, you won’t be disappointed by the mystifying forests and ancient mountain ranges that surround the area. This often visited and highly popular region has a vast array of spectacular parks and natural areas, like Chimney Rock State Park just several miles south of town. Chimney Rock State Park is named for its chimney-shaped rock formation, a large granite monolith that is climbable and hike-able. Reaching the top of this impressive natural feature provides guests with panoramic views of the fertile valley below it. A network of nature trails is intertwined within the woods around Chimney Rock, giving guests ample space to discover the mysteries of the forest. Be sure to hike to Hickory Nut Falls or the Gneiss Caves for some added fun.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is north of Black Mountain, with dozens of other reasons to bring your Black Mountain campervan rental to its fabulous forests. The park contains Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge escarpment, and the highest swinging bridge in the country. Hiking and camping are allowed at the park, although this is only an option for backcountry tent camping. Grandfather Mountain State Park is sandwiched between Pisgah National Forest and Cherokee National Forest in a particularly lovely region rich with natural beauty. Pisgah National Forest has thousands of acres teeming with old-growth forest, and you can trek through these wilderness areas on foot or opt to bike, rock climb, go fishing, or camp anywhere you see fit in the sprawling forest. Cherokee National Forest spans portions of both North Carolina and the neighboring state of Tennessee, giving you even more options to consider.

If you don’t mind hopping over the border into Tennessee, you can visit the most popular national park in the entire United States. Great Smoky Mountains National Park draws in over eleven million people per year, thanks to its unparalleled beauty, great location, and first-rate facilities. Chief among these facilities is the jaw-dropping observation deck that offers unbeatable views of the mountains. The park also contains part of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,000-mile trail that carves through the eastern United States, used for long-distance trekking. Along with this legendary trail, you can explore a certified UNESCO World Heritage Site or camp in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains themselves using your Black Mountain campervan rental.

City Sightseeing

While in town taking a break from the woods, you can pass the time in any number of ways. Navigating through the downtown and the peaceful Black Mountain Town Square will make you feel glad you decided to rent an RV in such an idyllic little community. There are lots of shops, art galleries, bars, and museums in this pleasant village, so deciding what to do is half the fun. Continuing with the art theme, Black Mountain Center for the Arts is housed in a converted government building. You can take a yoga class, see some locally made art, see some handmade jewelry, or catch a live performance at the Front Porch Theatre which often puts on theatrical productions.

Swannanoa Valley Museum has been open for over 30 years, open all summer and by appointment only in the wintertime. When you visit this trusted and fascinating historical resource, you can learn a great deal about the valley and the town, from the natives who called it home to the first pioneers to descend on the area and build the first frontiers settlements. Rafael Guastavino is also honored in the museum, a famed Spanish architect who called Black Mountain his home for his twilight years. Tour through and see some old artifacts and antiques in this gorgeous brick building which is a work of art in its own right.
