Originating as a coal mining settlement for the Black Diamond Coal Mining Company of California, Black Diamond, Washington became a town in its own right in 1959. It was originally settled by mostly European immigrants who came to work the mines, which was shut down following World War I when it became no longer viable.

A second mining boom happened in the early 1930s and has continued until recent years, although today Black Diamond serves predominantly as a community for people working in Seattle. It’s renowned amongst locals for the Black Diamond Bakery that produces a range of delicious bread and baked goods while being on the doorstep of Tiger Mountain’s hiking and mountain biking trails.

Also of note is the Luigi & Aurora Pagani House, which is believed to have been built by two Italian miners who lived here until the 1920s.

There are more than 1,200 graves at the cemetery, with gravestones marking the resting place of those who hailed from Italy, Australia, Russia, and Germany, together with numerous children who died during smallpox and flu epidemics in the early 1900s.
