A post office was established the year before and has been in continuous operation ever since. Billings was the retirement home of Holless Wilbur Allen, the inventor of the compound bow. Christian County was the filming location, along with Taney County, for the 2010 movie Winter's Bone which employed many local citizens in important roles.

The Great Outdoors

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is a monument to the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, an event that brought the reality of the war home to those who had only known what they had heard previously. The battlefield and its visitor center are open during normal business hours seven days a week, year-round, except for holidays; the park tour road is open during more specific hours. Guests wanting to see the battlefield from a vehicle should contact the park to inquire about more specific information. Guests may walk, jog, or bicycle along the marked lane only and are asked not to disturb the plants or animals they see.

Robert E. Talbot Conservation Area was established in 1980 as the Spring River Conservation Area (Spring River flows through the refuge) and was expanded to its present size between 1980 and 1986. The area along the river is rich bottomland soil, while farther from the river, the ground has rocky, upland soil. The area is a combination of open grassland and forest; it has two lakes and numerous ponds. Visitors can fish for white and black bass, hunt for deer, quail, and other resident wildlife, or camp overnight in established campsites. There are trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding; the area is a good destination for photography and bird watching.

Bois D'Arc Conservation Area is an undisturbed wildlife refuge where visitors can hunt for deer and small game, hike the trails that wind through the region, and practice photography and bird watching. There is an archery range on-site and guests can trap or do field trials (both require special permits).
