The Great Outdoors

If you appreciate spending time outdoors, Benton is a great place to rent an RV. Waterfall chasers can check out Benton Falls in Cherokee National Forest. The scenic 65-foot falls flow over a series of rocks and into a small pool at the base. Reach the cascades after a short and easy 1.5-mile hike. Because of its length and relatively level terrain, the hike to the falls is great for people of all ages and fitness levels, and you can even bring your dogs — just be sure to keep them on a leash.

Another excellent place to spend some time outdoors when you book an RV in Polk County is Rock Creek Scenic Area. The area is known for its many gorgeous waterfalls; there are 16 named falls in the 244-acre scenic area. Only three of the 16 waterfalls are easily accessible. To get to the rest, you’ll have to do some serious bushwhacking and stream crossing. The best time to visit the area is during the spring. At that time, blooming mountain laurel, morning glories, lady slippers, dwarf crested irises, and a large variety of other wildflowers adorn the trail. The waterfalls flow more boldly during the spring also.

Waterfalls are plentiful in Tennessee, but if you really want to get your heart pumping, book a whitewater rafting trip down the famous Ocoee River. This 92-mile river is home to world-famous rapids and was the location of the canoeing and kayaking events during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The majority of rapids and whitewater rafting outfitters are located about 30 miles outside of Benton in and around Ducktown, Tennessee.

RV Parks

Book a luxury RV rental in Benton, and one place you could stay is Chilhowee Campground in Cherokee National Forest within the Chilhowee Recreation Area. The campground has many campsites for both tents and RVs. The RV sites only have electric hookups, but there is a dump station within the facility. Guests to the campground can utilize McKamy Lake, a seven-acre lake built during the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Campers also have access to picnic sites, a bathhouse, and a beach area for swimming. Each site at the Chilhowee Campground has a picnic table, grill, and lantern post.

Another RV park you can use when you book an RV rental in Benton is Parksville Lake RV Campground. The RV sites each have electric hookups and provide ample shade. Though there are no sewer or water hookups, there’s an on-site dump station as well as potable water. A stream runs through the campground and several sites are situated along it. Guests to the campground have access to Parksville Lake along with its boat ramps and swimming beaches. Flush toilets, vault toilets, and showers are also available.

Exploring the City

Before Tennessee was settled by the English, Cherokee Indians made their homes in and around the Smoky Mountains. As such, the Tennessee area is replete with artifacts, structures, and other things dating back to the time of the Cherokees. One such structure is Fort Marr Blockhouse in Delano. Built in the early 19th century, the Fort Marr Blockhouse was used to detain Cherokee Indians before they were forced to move from the area via the Trail of Tears. Just a short walk from the fort, visitors to the area can check out an original Native American fish weir which remains intact in the Hiwassee River.

If you want to learn more about the area when you rent a motorhome in Benton, you can also check out The Ducktown Basin Museum. The museum outlines the history of the Burra Burra Mine, an old copper mine in the southeast corner of Tennessee. During its 60 years of operation, miners extracted approximately 15 million tons of copper ore. When you visit the museum, you can see many of the original mine buildings as well as a collection of photographs, artifacts, and exhibits portraying the industrial and cultural heritage of the old mining town.

Though not necessarily nearby, another place to visit when you book a motorhome rental in Benton is Chattanooga. It’s a little less than an hour's drive away from Benton and arguably one of Tennessee’s most scenic cities. There’s plenty to do when you visit Chattanooga. Dive deep below the earth with a trip to Ruby Falls, a 145-foot underground waterfall. Catch stellar views of the surrounding area atop Lookout Mountain or visit the iconic Rock City Gardens. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in downtown Chattanooga, and don’t forget to catch the sunset at popular Sunset Rock.

In the mood for some adventure? Benton is sure to deliver.
