The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the first humans to make their home in what would later become Belvidere, NJ. The first European settlers were Dutch people who were drawn to America by the promise of religious freedom and farming opportunities. A later influx of Italian immigrants is likely how the town name came to be.

Belvidere is an Anglicization of an Italian word that, depending on the dialect used, means "beautiful to see" or "place having a beautiful view." As the latter translation suggests, The city is a quaint, lush green town atop a hill dotted by historic homes in various period styles. It's said that on a clear day, one could see all the way to Philadelphia. Though there were people living in the area as early 1754, the town itself wasn't officially founded till 1845. Many of the original 18th-century homes were razed in favor of making way for more progressive and modern homes. As a result, a majority of the homes in town were built in 19th and 20th century on top of the original foundations.

Butting the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border, Belvidere is a great little town to visit. It's a few minutes from the southern part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (also referred to as the Gap), and several other parks and wilderness areas are within spitting distance of the town. This is the perfect spot to bring your travel trailer rental from Belvidere and hang out.

The closest large town is Hackettstown, a little over 16 miles east. The quaint town of Mountainhome, PA, is 45 miles north.

The Great Outdoors

For some reason, when people think of the Delaware River, they envision a lazy, slow river that trickles along hundreds of miles. It often surprises them when they learn that Delaware is a popular whitewater rafting river, and there are several stretches where it can be highly dangerous for even an experienced rafter. After an especially snowy or rainy season, rapids can be upgraded to Class IV or even V (difficult and extremely difficult, respectively). The Foul Rift, which is a particular spot close to Belvidere, is normally a Class II rapid with a drop of a 22 feet over a quarter mile. Although Class II is generally suitable for novices, this stretch is considered dangerous because it's difficult to scout out beforehand, and paddlers are often caught off guard because the stretch of the river prior to the drop is so tame in comparison. Park your Belvidere camper rental here and set out on a great adventure.

Jenny Jump State Forest is a popular park for outdoorsmen, rockhounds, astrophotographers, and adventurers. As the legend goes, the Lenni Lenape Native Americans ambushed a young girl named Jenny at top of a cliff. Fearing for Jenny's safety and purity, her father shouted, "Jump, Jenny, jump!" And thus the name -- and the urban legend -- was born. Putting aside the sinister origins, the park is a geologist's heaven. Not only does this area have the remnants of volcanoes from millions of years ago, there are evidences of glaciers that once covered the northeastern part of this country. Huge boulders and piles of sediment carried for hundreds of miles were deposited in Jenny Jump while simultaneously gouging out the land, creating ragged valleys and plains. Jenny Jump is one of the few remaining dark-skies parks along the east coast where the milky way can still be seen with the naked eye and enhanced with photography techniques. Although a small park, the 20 miles of trails over the varied terrain can be challenging and fun. Hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the valley. Will you be able to see Philadelphia from the highest vista? Rent a camper in Belvidere and go find out for yourself.

Worthington State Park is nestled inside the curve of the Delaware River and the Delaware Water Gap National Park. It boasts one of the most challenging terrains in New Jersey, with rocky, occasionally steep, trails. A section of the Appalachian Trail passes through this park, and hikers may occasionally encounter thru-hikers, which are people attempting to hike the entire length of the trail, about 2,190 miles. While not mandatory, if you encounter an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, it's good etiquette to offer water, snacks, and a few band-aids. Fishing in the Worthington Park's creeks, ponds, and along the River is excellent. Expect to catch smallmouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, and a few other less-common species. The American Shad's spring run is always impressive to witness, too.
