The town of Belton, Texas lies within the Killeen-Temple metropolitan area. This charming area is well known for being a prehistoric archaeological site, with over 6,000 years of continuous human habitation. The Waco, Nadaco, Lipan Apache, Tonkawa, and Apaches were all tribes living in the area before the arrival of European settlers in the mid 19th century. The town of was originally named Nolanville, but the name was changed to Belton in honor of Governor Peter Hansborough Bell.

Belton was hit hard by the Great Depression with most of the city’s population leaving for greener pastures, but the town has since reinvented itself into a cozy vacation town with gorgeous lakes and a vibrant downtown area full of locally owned businesses and restaurants. Belton also has an excellent trail system that connects all of its communal spaces together making it incredibly cyclist and pedestrian friendly. These parks are known to frequently host events like the Movies in the Park project that has live movie screenings on large screens in different public parks throughout the summer. On the edges of town, there are two massive lakes, Stillhouse Hollow Lake, and Belton Lake, both of which have a whole host of recreational activities and small parks along their shores. Dana Peak Park on the coast of Stillhouse Hollow Lake has ample open space to bicycle, hike, horseback ride, hunt, fish, or swim in the crystal-clear waters. The Grand Avenue Theater is a great place to catch a movie and eat some great food too; there is full kitchen service throughout every movie screening so you can keep your stomach happy while you watch the latest summer blockbuster. Take a ghostly wagon tour and do a bit of paranormal sightseeing. This is a fun way to see the historic downtown at night but perhaps it is only for the brave.

Lastly, check out the Bell County History Museum located inside an old Carnegie library built in 1904. This historic spot provides everyone with a unique chance to learn about the local history of Bell County, spanning back thousands of years. Here, incredible archaeological exhibits and artifacts can be seen on display.

Since Belton is a primarily an outdoors destination come summertime, there is no shortage of campgrounds and RV parks in the area. Belton RV Park is directly off Interstate 35 and close to the Central Texas State Fairgrounds, as well as the local rodeo. The park has a pool and laundry facilities in addition to many other amenities you’ll love.

Cicada Springs RV Park over in Killeen gets you a little closer to the larger neighbor of Belton, and within walking distance to a number of other shops and restaurants to visit.
