Founded in 1894, Bay City is the county seat of Matagorda County near Texas’ Gulf of Mexico coastline. Development began in the region with the coming of the railroads, then flourished with the discovery of oil and sulfur during the early 20th century.

Today, Bay City is a convenient place to rent an RV while exploring the wildlife refuges and historic sites of the region. It’s well served by family-friendly RV parks while being an easy drive from the international airports in either Houston or San Antonio.

Discover Bay City

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Bay City and head to Le Tulle Park on the western edge of the city. It’s named after a local rice grower, Victor L. LeTulle, who donated the land for the park, and was developed during the Great Depression. It’s home to two lakes, a children’s playground, and plenty of picnic tables, as well as an 18-hole disc golf course and two pavilions. Squirrels, raccoons, and turtles also inhabit the park, together with alligators and a variety of birds, with the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center located here.

A short drive west of Bay City takes you to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses more than 114,000 acres on the edge of San Antonio Bay. It was created in 1937 to provide a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds, with whooping cranes, herons, and roseate spoonbills among the regular sightings. Keep your eyes peeled for bobcats and collared peccaries as you explore the refuge’s grasslands, with American alligators also inhabiting the freshwater marshes.

Across the bay from the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is Matagorda Island, a 38-mile-long barrier island that’s the traditional homeland of the Karankawa Indians. It’s only accessible by boat, with the entire island protected in the Matagorda Island State Park and the Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a popular bird watching destination, with a variety of threatened and endangered migratory birds often spotted here, as well as being home to a historic mid-19th-century lighthouse.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Bay City and pull into one of the concrete RV sites at the Bay City Holiday RV Park, which can accommodate rigs up to 52 feet in length. There’s an on-site laundry facility, Wi-Fi, and satellite TV available, and pets are welcome to stay in the park with you.

Also in Bay City is the Traveler's Paradise RV Park, another big rig-friendly campground with water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electrical hookup sites. You can bring your pet with you and take advantage of the complimentary Wi-Fi that’s available while being on the doorstep of Bay City’s shops, restaurants, and services.

On the northern edge of Bay City lies 60 North RV Park, which offers 30 and 50 amp hookups in their pull-through or back-in sites. There’s an on-site laundry facility where you can catch up on your washing, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi and cable TV.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Bay City and head to the Matagorda County Museum, which details the people and events that have shaped the region. Admire the Neoclassical building that was established as the city's post office in 1912, then hear how the famous La Belle shipwreck was discovered by archaeologists and excavated from the bottom of Matagorda Bay. There’s also a children’s museum, with pioneer dress-up clothes and a recreated general store where they can practice their bartering skills.

If you’re traveling with kids, make the one-hour drive east to Lake Jackson and the Sea Center Texas where you can learn about the marine species that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico. There’s a boardwalk trail that winds through the surrounding wetlands, as well as touch tanks and a 50,000-gallon aquarium. Browse the interpretive displays in the visitor’s center, then join a hatchery tour to see where up to 15 million juvenile fish are produced each year.

RVers who are interested in the history of the region should drive north to the George Ranch Historical Park, which demonstrates life from frontier Texas to World War II. It’s set on a 20,000-acre working ranch where you can experience life for four generations of one family as you tour the historic homes and connect with the costumed interpreters. Watch a blacksmith working his craft and see cowboys rope and saddle cattle, then get hands-on in a range of farm-related activities.

Bay City is home to numerous supermarkets where you’ll find all the groceries you need, as well as plenty of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your camper rental in Bay City.
