Bartlett is a stereotypical Old-West Texas town, complete with architectural details made famous in classic films like The Magnificent Seven and Tombstone. Walking down the main street is like stepping back in time. One would almost expect to see rowdy patrons tossed out the swinging doors at the corner saloon, a scowling man standing guard outside his general store, and a line of horses tied up outside the bank. However, Bartlett is known as the “best little town in Texas.”

Bartlett had its 15-minutes of fame. Several movies were filmed in and around the town, including The Stars Fell on Henrietta, The Newton Boys, and a television show, Revolution.

The closest large town is Taylor, about 15 miles south. Though most of the region are farms and ranchlands, there are a few parks and large lakes nearby. Bartlett’s proximity to Austin and Temple helps make it an ideal place to rent an RV in.

The Great Outdoors

One of Central Texas’ hidden gems, the Granger Lake is bordered by designated wildlife area, including the Pecan Grove Wildlife Area and Sore Finger Wildlife Area. These parks protect the habitats of various local wildlife and birds, some of which are endangered. A shortlist includes the short-eared owl and Northern Harrier. There are a few miles of hiking trails for adventurers to explore. Having waders or stout hiking boots are recommended in springtime; the area can get marshy. Anglers and other water lovers can hit Granger Lake for recreational activities like swimming, paddle boating, and fishing, of course. The lake is known by the locals for having plentiful fish. Expect to catch fish like white bass, largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish.

As much as Texans love their fishing, there is plenty of recreational fun for the other adventurers. The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Area is a short ride in a Bartlett travel trailer rental. It offers several miles of hiking trails that weave through canyons and open plains, and through shrubby forests. The Balcones is in particular known for being a stopover spot for the butterflies on their biannual migratory trips. Thousands of butterflies travel in huge swarms, and on the good years, the swarm is so dense that it can darken the sky. Bring your Bartlett camper rental, though camping is prohibited, parking is plentiful.

RV Parks

While searching for an RV rental in Bartlett, TX, be sure to figure out where you’ll park while you grab a few hours of sleep. The Four Winds RV Park in Taylor may be a good option. The campground is gated and fenced, providing its visitors peace of mind while they’re away exploring the local attractions. Free WiFi, an on-site propane-filling station, and laundry room are among its other amenities.

The KOA located Northwest of Austin in Leander may be another attractive candidate. The campground is close to several hiking trails and also features a saltwater pool, a waterfall, and a gourmet fireplace pit.

For immediate access to fishing and waterfront recreational fun, Dana Peak Park campground may be worth considering. Though the facility is barebone, it does offer hookups for your RV. The closest town is Harker Heights.

Exploring the City

In Texas, where towns are few and far in between, it’s almost a necessity to rent a motorhome to explore the open ranchlands as well as the next closest city, such as Austin. Austin is well known for its quirky, artsy, fun scene. There are many attractions ranging from the typical historical to unusual. The Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown certainly qualifies as unique. One of the largest cavern systems in Texas, it boasts three different tours that take visitors into three different areas of the cavern. Two are relatively tame, taking visitors into well-established and maintained areas, and the third is strictly for adventurers. Though physically demanding (at times, crawling through tight passages and tunnels), they do not need previous spelunking experience. All three options require visitors to wear closed-toe shoes.

Blanton Museum of Art is another local favorite. In addition to featuring art from around the world, ranging between modern and ancient, art lovers will also enjoy local artists’ works hanging on the walls. Although some of the exhibitions are rotated on a regular basis, some artists are on permanent display, including the likes of Rembrandt, Goya, Tiepolo, and Picasso. Tours are available to the public on Saturday, Sunday, and Thursday.

The LBJ Presidential Library, which is structured like a museum, is open to the public. Get a glimpse into the events of the 1960s and 1970s that changed America as we know it. The Library features documents, artifacts, and photographs from the defining era, including the Civil Rights, Voting Rights Act, and the beginning of the National Parks.

The Gault Archeological site is one of the few sites in America where archeologists have definite proof of mankind’s continued occupation for at least 16,000 years. Millions of tools, pottery shards, and other artifacts have been found at this site, just a few miles from rural Florence, and remnants of long-extinct mammoth bones, as well. The director of the archeological research holds regular tours detailing their finds and the hypotheses about the first people of America (contact the Gault School at Texas State for a schedule).

Find the perfect Texas adventure in a Bartlett luxury RV rental and head out for the perfect family-fun excursion!
