Barre is often thought of as the little sister to Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, that’s just down the road from it. The two are nearly equal in size and have a similar number of hotels, eateries, and cultural attractions. The town was founded in the late 1700s but really began to boom a few decades later with the opening of nearby granite quarries.

This boom continued with the arrival of the railroad, which increased efficiency when shipping the massive loads of rock. Sculptors found the rock’s fine grain to be perfect for outdoor sculptures and particularly sought after Barre’s granite. Today, the Rock of Ages granite quarry outside of Barre is the largest quarry in the world and a tourist attraction in itself.
