Bandon is a city in Coos County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The area attracted public notice when, in 1851, French trappers discovered gold at Whiskey Run Beach and word spread; settlers began to arrive and, in 1853, the present townsite was established. It was known as Averill until 1874, when the town's name was changed to Bandon by George Bennett, after his hometown, Bandon, Ireland. The city's first post office was built in 1877 and the city was incorporated in 1891. Bandon's early economy was partially dependent on cheesemaking, and lumber and wood products, but by 1910 it had become a popular tourist destination. By 1912, it had become an important port for ships traveling between Portland and San Francisco.

In the mid-1930s, local cranberry farmers had organized a cooperative but their plans were put on hold when a fire destroyed large sections of the community. The town was later rebuilt and the cooperative continued, holding its first cranberry festival in 1947. Today the town is known as “The Cranberry Capital of Oregon”; it is still reliant on forestry product, cranberry production and processing, tourism and other industries for its economy, and is sometimes referred to in tourism literature as “Bandon By The Sea”.

Search for an RV in Coos County and you are ready to begin exploring the rugged coastline and interior that is the essence of Oregon. Other interesting, notable cities within reasonable travel distance are Coos Bay, Winston, Port Orford, Myrtle Point, and Lakeside. Winston is home to several parks and actively celebrates its relationship with nature; Myrtle Point is home to an interesting and historic logging museum and is home to the annual Coos County Fair and Rodeo. Your Bandon camper rental is your ticket to all of these places.

The Great Outdoors

South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is a wetland preserve that balances research with community need. Wooden boardwalks provide hiking access to the park; alternatively, guests can boat or kayak to get a closer look at the marine animal life and vegetation. The Discovery Center at the park entrance is knowledgeable and does an excellent job of maintaining the park facilities. Park your Bandon motorhome rental nearby and you can return to a life of comfort when you have finished your exploration.

Shore Acres State Park is a developed nature retreat with gardens, ocean views, and trails for walking. The park has a traditional Japanese garden, a formal garden, and several rose gardens with a variety of roses. It is situated on elevated sandstone cliffs and guests can view the ocean from the top or follow a trail to a secluded cove. It is possible to see migrating grey whales pass by and occasionally witness storms that send towering waves crashing against the shoreline. There is an observation area where guests can watch the storms in comfort.

Bullards Beach State Park is a public recreation park area providing camping and hiking facilities, and more. Visitors to the park can follow the pathways through groves of pine trees that protect the campsites from strong ocean breezes; some of the campsites have yurts, an added treat. From the campground registration booth, follow the mostly paved trail through open fields of grass and lowland forest to the beach, where you will find sandy dunes and the Coquille River Lighthouse. Biking is allowed along the beach (hard packed sand) as well as on the trails.

Exploring The City

Bandon is home to several renowned golf courses, one of which has been around since 1927. Two others have been acclaimed by Trip Advisor and Golf Digest magazine. There are art galleries and museums which should not be missed; one of the art galleries features work created from items that have washed up on shore, such as starfish or the ribs of a whale, and offers information sessions and education about pollution in the ocean. Bring some souvenirs back to your Bandon RV trailer rental to show friends back home and support your vacation memories.

Foodies will appreciate the Bandon Fish Market, where they can browse through freshly caught seafood and smoked fish. Taking some Dungeness crab back to your Bandon luxury RV rental for a home-cooked lunch or dinner is how bragging rights are earned after the vacation is finished (just don't forget to take pictures to back up your claims).

Needless to say, dining out is one of the perks of a Bandon vacation that doesn't have to be justified. Irish food can be had for the asking; one pub venue serves both traditional Irish fare, such as bangers and mash, and more mainstream items such as snapper and pot roast. Servings are generous. Other cuisines available include Cajun and Creole, Italian, Mexican and more.
