The town was founded in 1880 by Frank Fuller and gained its name from settlers who traveled from Auburndale, Massachusetts to escape the harsh winters of the northeast. Located in the Central Florida Highlands, the terrain around Auburndale is mostly flat with some gently rolling hills and many small lakes.

Just a few miles south of the city is the Chain of Lakes at Winter Haven. Comprising two areas, North Lakes and South Lakes connected by locks, there are over 24 interconnected lakes to explore. Entrance to the museum is free, and there are regular exhibitions of featured artists and themes.

Aviation enthusiasts will love the Fantasy of Flight collection of vintage aircraft. Started by Kermit Weeks in the mid 80’s, his passion for everything related to flight is obvious and infectious.
