The town was founded in 1880 by Frank Fuller and gained its name from settlers who traveled from Auburndale, Massachusetts to escape the harsh winters of the northeast. Located in the Central Florida Highlands, the terrain around Auburndale is mostly flat with some gently rolling hills and many small lakes.

The Great Outdoors

Just a few miles south of the city is the Chain of Lakes at Winter Haven. Comprising two areas, North Lakes and South Lakes connected by locks, there are over 24 interconnected lakes to explore. The area has plenty to offer on the water from paddle-boarding to water skiing, plus lakeside walks, bars, and restaurants.

All over this area, you’ll find tours of the lakes. Many companies offer canoeing, riverboat cruises, and airboat tours. They’re a great way of getting to see more of the Lakeland area.

Covering over 8,000 acres of hardwood swamp, Lake Marion Creek Wildlife Management Area is a short drive east in your camper rental from Auburndale. The area gives you access to many hiking trails, and an abundance of wildlife can be found, including deer, hogs, herons and even wild tortoise! Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times.

In nearby Polk is the Nature Discovery Center, incorporating the Circle B Bar Reserve, which is a free to enter information center. As well as offering educational programs, there are picnic areas and hands-on exhibits about the various habitats in Central Florida. Within the reserve, you may see a wide variety of bird life, such as ibis, spoonbills, cranes, and eagles. Along the reserves 3.5-mile hiking trail, it’s possible to encounter alligators, bobcats, squirrels and more.

Located in Winter Haven, you’ll find Cypress Campground, right on route 540 making access very easy. The park offers a heated swimming pool, clubhouse, and full hookup sites for your RV, along with plenty of outdoor activities to keep the kids entertained.

Exploring the City

Florida is packed full of famous attractions and close to Auburndale is Legoland Florida. The site was once home to Florida’s first theme park, Cypress Gardens, and the 150-acre site is now dedicated to everything Lego! Featuring more than 50 rides, attractions, restaurants, and a botanical garden, this is the largest interactive Legoland in the world. Kids of all ages will love it, but particularly those between 2 and 12.

For the more cultured, perhaps the Polk Museum of Art will appeal. Founded in 1966, the museum now has a permanent collection of over 2,500 pieces including works from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and many others. Entrance to the museum is free, and there are regular exhibitions of featured artists and themes.

Auburndale and the surrounding area is home to numerous antique stores. From modern Disney and Florida antiques to more traditional collectibles, you’re are bound to find it here.

Aviation enthusiasts will love the Fantasy of Flight collection of vintage aircraft. Started by Kermit Weeks in the mid 80’s, his passion for everything related to flight is obvious and infectious. Along with aircraft from the earliest days of flight, the collection includes many fine examples from the second world war. For the ultimate thrill, you can book a flight in one of their biplanes and even take the controls in their dual control Stearman PT-17.

IF you have a sweet tooth or have the kids with you, head to Dundee and the Citrus and Candy Factory in your travel trailer rental from Auburndale. Owned and run by the Davidson family since 1967, here you’ll find handmade candies and chocolates along with marmalades and jellies. Take a tour of the factory and pick up some lovely Florida gifts in the shop.
