Originally inhabited by Lenape, farmers, and settlers came to the area sometime in early 1700s. The local farmers often used Indian trails to transport crops from the Atglen area to Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Due to convoluted logic related to the local geography, Atglen’s claim to fame is they’re the only town in the world in which their East and West Main streets actually run north and south, respectively.

Initially called Penningtonville, the local townfolks voted to rename the town’s name to Atglen when it was incorporated in 1875. It’s unknown how they arrived at this particular name. It may be related to a nearby stream, which is called “Glen Run.” The town is just adjacent to the stream.

The closest large town is Christiana, less than a mile northwest.

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV in Atglen, gain a new world of adventure and fun. There are several small pockets of wilderness nestled in between corners of farmlands. Wolf’s Hollow Park is a hidden day-use gem that locals love. A former estate farm, 569 acres of land packs in several miles of trails. Deer, foxes and an occasional beer can be sighted here, which will delight any aspiring nature photographer. The original house is still standing, though due to its condition, should not be entered. This park does not allow mountain biking.

ChesLen Preserve is an unique park in that a portion of it is still being farmed. Hiking trails wind around the edge of fields filled with rows of soybeans and corns. Wooded glades with babbling creeks running through are a welcome respite from the humid summers that Pennsylvania is well known for. Hop into your Atglen RV rental and find your adventure!

RV Parks

When you book an Atglen motorhome rental, don’t forget to figure out where to park while you grab a few hours of sleep. There are several private campgrounds in the area, particularly near Lancaster. Oma’s Family Campgrounds in Kirkwood, on the outskirts of the Amish Country, is a serene spot. Surrounded by farmlands, guests can enjoy the slower pace of life as they watch the local farmers go about their business. Amenities include 30 amps electric, water, and sewer hookups and coin-operated showers.

The full-service Yogi Bear Jellystone resort is also close by, in Quarryville. The luxury resort has a number of family-friendly activities like laser tag, escape rooms, and water rides. There are, of course, adult-oriented amenities like bars and a nightclub.

Exploring the City

Atglen’s central position in between Philadelphia, Baltimore and Harrisburg makes it an ideal place to use as a home base for your RV rental. It’s a little over an hour to Philadelphia and Baltimore, and just about an hour to Harrisburg. You don’t have to drive far to find some fun, though.

Even this far inside Pennsylvania, there was an urgent need for the Underground Railroad network to transport slaves and refugees to freedom. Christiana’s Zercher Hotel was a “way station” (also known as a safehouse). Visitors to the hotel can retrace the steps of those involved with the network and learn what motivated the hotel owner to take action.

“Stick ‘em up!” Become an innocent passenger in a holdup on the Strasburg Rail Road en route to Paradise. The dastardly, infamous bank robbers Clyde and Bonnie will rob you of your loot (provided by the railroad). Can you foil their attempt to make off with the precious baubles and jewelry? Find out!

Although the local Amish communities shun English visitors (a polite term for non-Amish people), there are a few tour guides who are pre-approved. Join one and get an up-close look at life without modern technologies. Learn what it’s like to wash clothes, plow, and cook without electricity or modern tools.

Hankering for fun and adventure? The Dutch Wonderland near Lancaster is one of the oldest amusement parks in Pennsylvania. It has over 35 rides ranging from pulse-pounding rollercoasters to thrilling-but-tamer bumper cars. Visitors can browse in Dutch-themed shops and sup at dozens of different restaurants, including Dippin’ Dots, the ice cream of the future. The live entertainment will get your toes a-tapping, too! Princess Brooke, Duke, and Mystical Merlin wander the park, eager to interact with the park-goers and have their photographs taken.

At the end of a long day of adventure and fun, take a drive on the long, winding roads in your luxury motorhome from Atglen. Enjoy the tranquil, lush green hills.
