Although there were certainly settlers in the area as early as the mid-1800s, the town didn’t get its first post office until 1877. Prior to a railroad laying down tracks, the only way to get mail or news about the outside world was via a river steamer that came by on an irregular basis.

The town of Anthony was officially founded in 1892, and named after one of the community leaders, E.C. Anthony. In its early years, the main industry was phosphate mining. When the easily-accessible veins dried up, the town turned to farming.

Today, the town’s main industries are small-business farms and horse farms. Some of the residents travel to the larger neighboring towns for work, as well. The closest large town is Ocala about eight miles south. The convenient access to both Ocala and Ocala National Forest, which is just a few miles to the east, makes Anthony an ideal place to rent an RV in.
