Altus is a city in Jackson County, Oklahoma, as well as the county seat. It was established in 1886 under the name “Frazer,” as a Great Western Cattle Trail trading post; cowboys could purchase buttermilk here, and it became known locally as “Buttermilk Station.” A post office was established in 1886 under the name Frazer, but a flash flood destroyed the town and post office in 1891. The residents moved their town to higher ground and renamed it “Altus” (Latin for “high”); the name stuck. Altus has historically been an important railroad town and was a WWII training location for military pilots.

Search for an RV in Jackson County, and you are one step closer to retracing the steps of the pioneers who settled Oklahoma (only more comfortably). Visiting some other nearby communities is a good way to maximize your time here. New Cordell is the home of a community library funded by a grant from the Carnegie Foundation. Hollis has only one stop light within its city limits, located at the intersection of Highways 30 and 62. Vernon, Texas, was one of the stops along the Great Western Cattle Trail; it is believed that as many as seven million cattle passed through the town over a span of approximately 20 years. Your Altus travel trailer rental is how your vacation will begin, but where you take it from there is up to you.

The Great Outdoors

Quartz Mountain State Park is a semi-cultivated outdoor recreation area where visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and waterskiing on Lake Altus-Lugert. Guests also have the option of strolling along the park's sandy beaches, hiking to the mountain peaks, or watching for eagles from anywhere within the park. There are many campground amenities within the park such as restrooms with showers and sanitary dump stations, and those wishing to stay overnight can primitive camp or stay in their Altus camper rental (some sites have full hookups).

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge was established in 1901 to protect endangered species from extinction and re-introduce some species that had been forced out of the area, such as bison, elk, river otters, and many more. Parts of the refuge are mixed-grass prairies that weren't farmed due to the underlying rock formations which couldn't be plowed. Limited fishing and hunting are allowed within the park, or guests can enjoy viewing and photographing the resident wildlife that also includes white-tailed deer and numerous bird, reptile, amphibian, and plant species. Some areas within the refuge are host to a variety of tree species stands.

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is a little farther out and may require a day trip or overnight stay, but the scenery makes the travel worthwhile. It is a multi-use recreational area that is home to bison and bats and miles upon miles of hiking trails that also accommodate mountain bikes and horseback riding. Some of the trails are easy and not too difficult, others more so, and range in length from short to long distances. Fishing, no-wake boating, and swimming are permitted in Lake Theo; guests can also enjoy geocaching and picnicking or take a scenic drive through the park. Camping options range from primitive to drive-in sites.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds within a short distance of Altus, and some of them may have mobile homes. Your Altus RV trailer rental is all you will need to guarantee an enjoyable vacation in this area.

Buffalo Bob RV Park is a fully cultivated RV campground with paved access roads and pads, and plenty of room for large RVs. Sites can be rented by the day, week, or month, and include electrical hookups and pull-through access. There is a clubhouse for guests to enjoy, restrooms with showers, and laundry facilities. The outdoor area has a patio with tables and chairs, plus a gas grill and smoker. The park is pet-friendly and has pet restroom facilities.

Exploring The City

A good place to begin your exploration of Altus is at the Museum of the Western Prairie which has exhibits of farmers plying their trade, daily farm living, and more; the exhibits are located both indoors and outdoors. Those who would like to unwind can choose from several bars that offer live music and dancing, karaoke nights, and much more. Altus is not particularly large, which provides a good opportunity to take a walking tour and enjoy the sights and sounds, practice photography, or perhaps just relax at a local cafe. Don't forget to take your Altus motorhome rental for a spin on the local highways; driving an RV is just one of the benefits of this type of vacation and one that you won't forget any time soon.

There are a number of good eateries in Altus, most of which aren't too expensive. A local barbecue joint is open from late morning to early evening for lunch and dinner. The service is friendly, and the menu has a good selection of meat choices and side dishes. Guests dining here should try the sausage and brisket platter. Portions are large, so don't be shy about taking your leftovers home to your Altus luxury RV rental for a late-night snack.
