High up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado is the small village of Alma. The town is two hours' drive from both Denver and Colorado Springs, and only several miles from many of the state’s best ski and snowboard resorts. Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Vail, and Keystone can easily be found when you rent an RV in Alma and head north on the winding mountain roads.

Alma has long been considered one of the highest incorporated municipalities in the country at an astonishing elevation of 10,000 feet, double the elevation of Denver, the “Mile High City”. Those that book an RV in Alma usually do so to reconnect with nature. The Rocky Mountains represent the Centennial State at its absolute finest and breathing in the purest alpine air while gazing out at surreal mountain peaks is an absolute privilege. Alma might lack the infrastructure or attractions to keep you busy, but finding an Alma camper rental and venturing off is a fantastic way to experience Colorado.

Explore the Outdoors

One thing Colorado will never run out of is its stunning forested nature parks. The Rocky Mountains are a refuge for the wild, hidden away from the encroaching cityscapes of Denver. These peaceful mountain getaways can be found nearly everywhere around town, so making the time to see them all is certainly a challenge. Spinney Mountain State Park is a wonderful park to the southeast with a large reservoir that is popular with fishing enthusiasts. The Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Spinney Mountain are great places to park your Alma RV rental and take a hike through the woods. Next to Spinney Mountain State Park is Eleven Mile State Park which has a massive lake of its own. Witcher Cove, Rocking Chair, Lazy Boy, North Shore, and Rocky Ridge are all incredible campgrounds found on the water’s edge where you can rest peacefully with your Alma RV rental by owner. Hundreds of campsites, miles of trails for hiking and biking, and a well-stocked fishing lake make this a popular destination on weekends especially.

The town of Alma is quite literally surrounded by Pike National Forest, a sprawling wilderness full of evergreen trees and snowcapped peaks. Over a million acres make up this fabulous nature sanctuary in the mountains where hiking, biking, rafting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, rock climbing, and of course, camping are all acceptable ways to enjoy the land. Pikes Peak, which shares its name with the forest, was named after Zebulon Pike, a frontier explorer among the first non-native people to see the Rocky Mountains up close. Pikes Peak is one of the most notable features contained within the park and climbing to its summit is an exciting challenge.

There are lots of national parks in Colorado to visit if you have the time for it but if you can only make your way to one, head west through the scenic mountain passes to reach Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, a breathtaking natural feature that flies way under the radar. These majestic black canyons have slowly been carved into the Earth’s crust over millions of years by the raging Gunnison River which cuts its way across Colorado. It might not be as big or famous as the Grand Canyon but this hidden gem is an unbelievable place to behold when you rent an RV in Alma and set off for mountain adventures.
