Alba is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Texas in Wood County. The city is about an hour and a half away west of Dallas. Shreveport. LA is about two hours east, and the town is less than two hours from either the Arkansas state line or the Oklahoma state line. Alba was likely first settled in 1843 by a gunsmith named Joseph Simpkins. Simpkins and his family were from Missouri. While it’s not clear how the town got its name, it was likely named after Scotland. “Alba” is the Scots Gaelic word for Scotland.

A few years after its settlement, oil was discovered here. That discovery brought the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroad to the area. The town had several operating coal mines. Visitors to Alba can experience a piece of railroad and fossil fuel history that is so typical of Texas. The town also has beautiful nature getaways located within a short drive.
