Akron, Colorado takes its name from the large city of Akron in Ohio. This tiny frontier town was one of the first places settled in all of Colorado back when settlers were creeping farther and farther west in pursuit of prosperity and happiness. The town is a 90-minute drive from both Denver and Fort Collins and is one of the few population centers in the remote grasslands of eastern Colorado.

If you book an RV in Akron, you might be surprised to see a whole different face of Colorado, far different from the land of towering mountain peaks and dense evergreen forests. Fortunately, you can still venture off to the Rocky Mountains when you rent an RV in Akron, or anywhere else in a state known for its natural beauty.

Discover Akron

Explore the Outdoors

If you have spent any time in Colorado’s front range, or the Rocky Mountains themselves, you will find that Akron hardly feels like it is part of Colorado. Despite its high elevation, the area surrounding it is largely flat with few landmarks to demarcate location. While you might have to drive a bit to catch a glimpse of the Rocky Mountains, there are some great parks to explore in eastern Colorado that are often overlooked. North Sterling State Park is one of the places you can visit when you rent an RV in eastern Colorado. Here you can enjoy some camping on the edges of North Sterling Lake. This massive reservoir has several miles of hiking trails along its shores and several boat ramps for boat owners to use. There are over 100 campsites to choose from, several swimming beaches, a visitor center, and tons of fish to catch and cook up over a campfire. Jackson Lake State Park is quite similar to North Sterling State Park and has its own lake. The lake is also a man-made reservoir created by diverting water from the South Platte River for irrigation purposes. Fishing, hunting, birdwatching, and off-road driving are popular pastimes while visiting this Colorado park, and there are campsites where you can park your Akron camper rental.

Pawnee National Grassland is a unique feature in northern Colorado, with miles and miles of grasslands and wildflowers dotted with buttes and other strange geological features. The land might look like it is devoid of life but it happens to be a diverse and important ecosystem home to thousands of species of animals and plants. Sunsets and sunrises and darkened night skies are part of the beauty when you bring your Akron RV rental to the grasslands, and there are even hiking trails and camping sites for guests to utilize during their stay.

If you find that you absolutely need to experience the majestic Rocky Mountains up close, Rocky Mountain National Park is only around 150 miles west. This phenomenal park is one of the most well-known and well-visited in the entire country with almost five million visitors visiting it each year. You can trek on hiking trails that traverse alpine tundra, rugged mountain terrain, delightful subalpine meadows, and enchanting forest groves while at the iconic park, and camp out near ponds and lakes high up in the mountains with stunning vistas overlooking the landscape below.

RV Parks to Visit

Akron has no campgrounds or RV parks right in town, so hitting the road is the way to go when it comes to finding a place to set up camp. Country Comfort Motel & RV Park is an option in Fort Morgan, right in the middle of town. This park is within walking distance of several shops and restaurants.

Emerald RV Park is close by right off Interstate 76, so it caters to lots of road trippers and travelers. The park has all the basic amenities. If you drive the Akron RV rental a couple of hours west towards Denver and the mountains, you'll find a variety of other park options.

You can also opt to stay in the midst of some Colorado nature at the nearby state parks like North Sterling State Park, Jackson Lake State Park, or the Pawnee National Grasslands.

City Sightseeing

When you book a camper rental in Akron, CO, you won't find a bustling city center. The town itself is quite lovely but you need to head to the nearest city, Fort Morgan if you want to see some attractions.

Fort Morgan Museum is a museum maintained by caring volunteers with a passion for history. A wide range of exhibits and informational displays recount the history of eastern Colorado, explaining the plights of the early settlers and the indigenous people that were displaced from their original land. There is a special small section of the museum dedicated to the memory of Glenn Miller, who was a legendary jazz musician that was born and raised in the town.

The Sherman Street National Historic District is a gorgeous little enclave in the heart of Fort Morgan, that is truly a pleasure to stroll through. While you cannot do much aside from observing the area, seeing beautiful antiquated homes from over 100 years ago is a memorable way to get a feel for the local area. It might not live up to the likes of the Golden Gate Bridge, but the Rainbow Bridge is a well-known local landmark in the area. This bridge sports an unusual style, with unique features and stunning views of the river valley below it.
