Agate is an unincorporated community in northeastern Elbert County, Colorado and the site of a U.S. Post Office. There are two rumors regarding how the town was named. Once suggests that it was named after the silica quartz rock found in the area; another story suggests that it was named after the wooden gates that had “A” shaped cross braces. It was originally named Gebhardt by the Union Pacific Railroad which arrived in 1876, but it had been informally referred to as Agate before that by the ranchers who had settled there. The town's name was officially changed to Agate in 1882.

Book an RV in Elbert County and you are ready to begin exploring this vast and untamed region of Colorado. There are a few other towns that might be worth visiting and spending some time in. Brush is a small town that likes its social events and none of them more than its annual rodeo. Akron, Colorado was named after a railroad employee's wife's hometown, Akron, Ohio. Limon started as a railroad work-camp for the Kansas-Colorado Springs railway line. Castle Rock has many historic buildings partially constructed using rhyolite, a popular local material used in decorative rock work. Bennett supports its art community through various social events, such as a Christmas lighting contest and free summer concerts. An Agate travel trailer rental is how you will get to explore these and other destinations.
