Originally a part of a grand estate called the Carroll Estate, portions of the land was parceled out and sold off in the early 1800s. When a railroad laid down tracks and built a depot, a small settlement grew around it. This village was originally called Davis’ Warehouse due to a particular warehouse that a prominent resident of a neighboring town, Dr. Meredith Davis, built to house his flour shipments. The first true resident of this town was a black man, Robert Palmer, who ran a general store. The community was renamed to Adamstown when the railroad assigned an agent to the depot: Adam Kohlenburg.

Due to the town’s proximity to the Potomac River, this town was the site of many skirmishes during the Civil War and was often raided by troops for supplies. Most residents supported the Confederates, and the town even formed a company of militiamen to support the south. Local lore says that the schism between the supporters of the North and South sides was so contentious that one family had two sons that fought for each.

Adamstown’s proximity to Frederick, and Washington, DC, as well as several Maryland state parks, makes it an ideal place to search for an RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to rent an RV is to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Exploring the outdoors has never been easier. There are dozens of wilderness parks in central Maryland, and many more beyond. The C&O Canal Trust park is actually a massive linear park that runs parallel to the Potomac River from Cumberland, MD, to Washington, DC. The closest access point to the towpath and the river itself is Point of Rocks, The Potomac River is infamous for its rough currents, and sections are as high as Class IV rapids. Kayakers and rafters should research the rapids carefully. Fishing from the banks is encouraged. The river is home to a variety of fish and aquatic life, including striped bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, shad, catfish and snakehead. Snakehead is non-native, and if fishermen catch one, they should remove it from the river and dispose of it elsewhere.

The South Mountain’s ridgeline stretches all the way from Virginia to Pennsylvania, encompassing several thousand acres of wilderness. Including the Appalachian Trail, which follows the top of the ridge the entire way, there are hundreds of miles of multi-use trails. Hike, bike, fish, and camp. Hikers who make it to the top of the ridge are rewarded with a stunning vista of the valleys to the west and east. Atop the Weverton Cliffs, hikers can enjoy a panoramic view of the Potomac River, the Virginia side of the border, and on a good day, a view of West Virginia’s Harpers Ferry.

RV Parks

One advantage to obtaining an RV trailer rental in Adamstown, MD, is: a majority of Maryland’s state parks have campgrounds that can accommodate long rigs. It’s easy to find someplace to park overnight. The C&O Canal Trust has several campgrounds, some with electric hookups, at multiple points along the Potomac River. Calico Rocks Campsite, for example, is conveniently close to a modest park, the Heater’s Island Wildlife Management Area. One downside to this spot is it’s very close to train tracks, and it can be noisy at times.

Alternatively, a private campground such as Brunswick Family Campground, just downriver of Knoxville, may be more appealing. In addition to full 30/50 amps hookups, it offers amenities like WiFi, a play area, and a camp store with ice cream stocked.

Exploring the City

Though Adamstown is a quiet farming town, a luxury RV rental makes it easy to explore the countryside in style and find all the little fun shops and hole-in-wall pubs. Several farms in the area run farmer’s markets stands, and “you-pick” programs. Hedgeapple Farm has been in the business since the early 1700s. It’s now a nonprofit endeavor that works with the other local cattle farmers. Customers can get delicious pasture-fed, no-antibiotics beef at the market.

As it turns out, grapes and orchard fruits thrive in Maryland’s mild, occasional humid climate. There are several wineries and vineyards in central Maryland. The Willow Oaks Craft Cidery, which was one of the first orchard wineries to be certified organic, makes both cider and fruit wines. The winery has won several awards over the years for their ciders and fruit wines. The winery has a tasting room in Middletown that overlooks a grove of apple orchards. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Wrap up a long day of adventure with some homemade ice cream, which is an increasing rarity these days. The Rocky Point Creamery has over 80 flavors. The sinfully delicious ice cream is made using cream from a dairy farm owned by the same family and made on site. The dairy cows are grass-fed, and no antibiotics or hormones are used. The memories made in the perfect Adamstown RV rental will last you a lifetime!
