The Suffolk area is rich with natural areas that offer a wide variety of activities for folks of all ages and abilities. With many lakes, rivers, and nearby ocean shores, this part of Virginia is truly a watersport paradise. Nearby mountains offer other experiences, and the landscape is green and beautiful most of the year.

Lone Star Lake is actually comprised of 12 lakes, and features freshwater fishing and piers, a four-mile horseback riding trail, boat access on all the lakes, picnic areas and playgrounds. The interestingly named Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is one of the few true American wilderness areas left, covering more than a million acres of this part of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina. Its known for a unique blend of wildlife and flora from northern and southern species, including black bear, bobcats, river otters and many rare plants. In the center of the swamp is the largest of the two natural lakes in Virginia. Lake Drummond covers 3,100 acres, but is just six feet deep. Cypress trees rise from the still waters, creating a mysterious and beautiful scene. Hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, boating and more are all activities that can be enjoyed in the Great Dismal Swamp. Nearby is Dismal Swamp State Park and, though located in North Carolina, is an extension of the Virginia portion.

A section of the world-famous boating and sailing mecca of the Intracoastal Waterway, near Chesapeake, is located near Suffolk. But, the activities available are not just for boaters. There are several miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails. Anglers are in heaven here, with many fishing spots, piers, and areas to enjoy a day relaxing and reeling in the big ones. City Attractions

Suffolk is rich in history, and features a quaint downtown area with unique shopping boutiques, fine restaurants and a wide variety of things to see and do.

A favorite spot for locals and visitors alike is the Suffolk Art Gallery, housed in a former library, and featuring a variety of exhibits through a partnership with the Suffolk Art League and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. There are painting and arts workshops, including weaving and quilting, as well as art classes and other events hosted by the art league.

Suffolk’s city marina is Constant’s Wharf, featuring shops and restaurants, as well as marine and boating supplies. There are wonderful riverfront strolls to take and you can even kayak to your lunch via the Nansemond River.

The restored Main Street train station has been turned into the fascinating Seaboard Station Railroad Museum. Built in 1885, the building has been preserved and features gorgeous Queen Anne styling, reminiscent of the Victorian Age. There are collections of items from the Seaboard Airline Railroad, Virginian Railroad and other vestiges of rail history, including steam locomotive bells, and lights, as well as many models of locomotives and train cars. Kids of all ages love this little museum.

The premier visual and performing arts venue in the area, the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, is located in a stunning 1922 Greek-Revival building, right in the heart of historic downtown. This is the place to go for concerts, ballets, symphony performances, children’s plays, puppet shows and so much more. There is something happening every week, and tours of the historic and beautiful building are available.
