Settled in 1847 and known for being one of the oldest communities in the state of Texas, DeSoto is a lively suburb of Dallas. The city is named for a doctor in the early community, Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart. For nearly 100 years, DeSoto remained a tiny community, with a dwindling population throughout the two world wars. It was not until incorporation in 1949 that the city finally began to expand, with a rapidly growing population in the area.

DeSoto is still one of the fastest growing parts of Texas and benefits greatly from its position inside one of the biggest and bustling cities in all of America. Both Fort Worth and Dallas ensure that there is plenty to do when you book an RV in DeSoto, and if that weren’t enough, there are delightful parks and recreation areas scattered all throughout the area. Rent an RV in DeSoto as soon as you can and start planning your trip to one of the best suburbs of Dallas.

Discover DeSoto

Explore the Outdoors

Once you get away from the hustle and bustle of the Dallas metropolitan area, you can start thinking about where you want to head first in your DeSoto camper rental. Cedar Hill State Park is a large park on the edges of the metro area that provides a natural oasis to escape to on weekends. The park is on the banks of Joe Pool Lake, a vital part of the park’s appeal, especially in the sweltering Texas summertime. You can take a refreshing dip in the waters of the lake, go for a boat ride, fish for dinner, or camp out on the shores in your DeSoto RV rental by owner. The park is only ten miles southwest of Dallas and has its own fishing pier, picnic area, bicycle trails, boat ramps, and an agricultural history museum.

Lake Whitney State Park also has a lake for guests to appreciate. There are some small waves in Lake Whitney that make swimming a favorite activity in the park, but fishing, boating, jet skiing, waterskiing, and hiking on the nature trails are other common ways to utilize the facilities on site. Lake Whitney State Park even has nature programs and workshops for children to learn about the environment, and a few campgrounds that are ideal places to stay overnight with your DeSoto motorhome rental.

There are some great national forests you can head off to in your DeSoto RV rental should you feel the urge to road trip through the Lone Star State. Davy Crockett National Forest, for instance, is a natural haven for outdoor enthusiasts to relish when they leave the city behind. The forest is named for legendary western folk hero Davy Crockett, who served as a politician and fought at the Alamo. The land mostly consists of hardwood-pine forests laid out over a wide swath of land. The main point of interest at the forest is Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, known for its gorgeous views and pleasant lakefront campgrounds.

Sam Houston National Forest is named for another Texas hero and is located just north outside of Houston. In addition to the impressive scenery, part of Sam Houston National Forest’s appeal are the archaeological sites dating back over 10,000 years within the park. There are plenty of trails to walk or bike on, like the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail that is well known amongst long-distance hikers. There are three campgrounds in the forest where you can stay when you rent an RV, like the Cagle, Stubblefield, and Double Lake Recreation Areas.

RV Parks to Visit

You might not find too many options when it comes to campgrounds for you and your DeSoto camper rental right in town, but it gets easier to find RV parks nearby when you branch out a bit. Good Luck RV Park is in the area and it's within walking distance of several restaurants and shops. This urban park has laundry facilities, a dog park, and quite a few other amenities.

Dallas Hi Ho RV Park has both tent sites and sites for RVs. Full hookups are available and there are restroom and laundry facilities too.

City Sightseeing

DeSoto is blessed to be so close to both Fort Worth and Dallas, so visitors to the city have a seemingly infinite number of attractions and points of interest to sift through while they visit. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is one of many places where you can learn about natural history and the ancient animals that once walked the earth. This unbelievable facility does its best to inspire and cultivate a love of science, with awesome displays and towering dinosaur skeletons made from real fossils.

The Dallas World Aquarium is a rather popular institution that is home to a dazzling array of exotic animals despite its distance from the ocean. The sea bird exhibit, in particular, is one of the most impressive parts of the entire place.

Art lovers can rejoice knowing that the Dallas Museum of Art is nearby, showcasing countless works of art from all over the world. There are modern works from the 20th century as well as ancient masterpieces from classical era Greece.

The International Museum of Cultures is a hidden gem only a few miles from DeSoto. It may be small but this facility houses a collection of artifacts and items from cultures across the globe. Bright costumes and authentic weaponry are just a few things you may find while touring the museum.
