What could be better than renting an RV and taking a trip through Northern California’s wine country? Sonoma Valley gets all the tourist attention, but it also has the prices to match. If you’d prefer a less expensive alternative, the city of Livermore might be a perfect choice. When you book an RV rental in Livermore, you’ll find that it’s just 45 miles to the East of San Francisco; that’s only an hour and a half trip on public transportation. To get to the Bay Area, just take the #14 bus to Dublin and then the BART into the city.

RV Parks in Livermore

Northern California is densely populated and real estate prices are quite high, which makes it a challenging place for RV rentals in Livermore; there are just not that many places to make camp. While Livermore has more options than the Bay Area, there’re still very few sites from which to choose and it’s a good idea to reserve them in advance if you’ll be traveling during peak season.

The Lake Del Valle Family Campground may be just the spot to park your Livermore motorhome rental. It’s ten miles South of Livermore and has 21 sites with RV hookups along with two beautiful beaches with lifeguards on duty. Fifteen miles to the East is the Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area, where the sites are only $10/night, but there are no hookups for the Livermore RV rental here. It’s also a popular destination for motocross riders, so it’s not a good choice if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Lastly, there’s the Alameda County Fairground in nearby Pleasanton, though it doesn’t have any hookups and only minimal facilities.

A Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree and Safeway are all located on Las Positas Road, on the North side of town and just off I-580. Be sure to stock up on supplies for the motorhome rental in Livermore before heading to your campsite, as they’re all fairly remote and may not have anything more than a high priced convenience store nearby.

Exploring the City of Livermore

For city lovers, the main draw of staying in Livermore will obviously be its proximity to San Francisco. However, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy a little bit of small-town charm in between your visits to the big city.

This is wine country, so you’d be remiss if you didn’t visit at least one (or three) wineries as you’re passing through with the Livermore RV rental. Check out Wente Vineyards, 3 Steves Winery, or Bent Creek Winery; most wineries in the area have tastings and some offer free tours of their facilities.

Bringing the kids on the Livermore RV rental vacation? Consider spending the day at Boomers Livermore Amusement Park. The park has laser tag, mini golf, go-karts and bumper boats; everything the kids will need to burn off the excess energy from all those hours on the road.

If you have even a passing interest in science, or just want to see some of the cool things it can do, you’ll surely want to take a tour of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It’s one of the premier scientific research facilities in the United States. It’s also open to the public on Fridays and a tour of it includes stops at the National Ignition Facility, home of the world’s most powerful laser, the National Atmospheric Release Center, which tracks the spread of hazardous material in the atmosphere, and the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, which assists in nuclear physics and medical research.

If you’d prefer an adventure through the sales racks though, stop off at the San Francisco Premium Outlets. It’s only five miles from Livermore on I-580 and includes names like Bloomingdale’s, Tommy Hilfiger, and Coach.

Every rental RV road trip also needs a stop at a strange tourist trap, and Livermore has the perfect one. You probably didn’t know this, but the city is home to the longest burning light bulb in the world. The aptly named Centennial Bulb in Fire Station #6 has been turned on for nearly 112 years. The firemen at the station are always welcoming of curious tourists who want to see the bulb.

Things to Do Outside Near Livermore

Northern California is famous for its easy access to the great outdoors. The Sierra Nevada mountains, Big Sur, Redwood National Park are all reasonably close, so you don’t need to go far to find a good place to spend the day in nature. When you rent an RV in Livermore, you’ll experience the region’s beauty, while also having all the comforts of home right in the RV.

Del Valle Regional Park is only ten miles South of Livermore and offers excellent fishing spots in the lake, kayak, and paddleboard rentals, and trails that permit your dog to go off-leash. If you’d like to learn about the flora and fauna of the park, there’s also a boat ride around the lake with an audio tour.

Alternatively, Brushy Peak Regional Preserve is just eight miles Northeast of Livermore and provides a more rustic outdoor opportunity. Trails fan out in directions but the main attraction is the 1,700 foot-tall Brushy Peak. It’s quite the workout and you’ll see plenty of locals sweating it up if you visit in the early morning or just before sunset.
