Called “the loveliest village on the plains,” Auburn, Alabama is a town known for its university. With a population of roughly 63,000, Auburn is the largest city in eastern Alabama. It is the hub of the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Area. It is often paired with Columbus, GA in statistical analysis to give the entire area a population over 500,000.

Though it is called “the Plains,” Auburn actually has high hills and deep valleys that one expects from east Alabama and west Georgia. The summers are hot and humid. The winters tend to be fairly mild. There are three main creek systems that feed the geography around Auburn, and Chewacla State Park offers the southernmost foothill of the Appalachian mountain range. There are some plains in parts of the area, though. Parts of the plains are fairly undeveloped and used for raising cattle.
