Newcastle, Wyoming is located in the far eastern portion of the state and is a regional hub for tourists visiting the Black Hills just across the border in South Dakota. When you book an RV in Newcastle, you’ll have easy access to multiple national parks in addition to the beautiful landscapes that the state is famous for.

While Wyoming is primarily known for the soaring peaks of the Teton, Wind River, and Bighorn ranges, the rolling hills around Newcastle and the forests of the Black Hills can be equally exciting for nature lovers. Newcastle is quite small though and may not have all the urban amenities that those choosing to rent an RV there might need; fortunately, the towns of Casper and Rapid City are just a couple of hours' drive away.

Discover Newcastle

The Great Outdoors

Most visitors getting a camper rental in Newcastle choose it for its proximity to the Black Hills. Badlands National Park is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts exploring America’s Great Plains region, and it’s just a short drive away from Newcastle. Hiking opportunities abound in this unique park as you explore the otherworldly rock formations. If you’re keen on doing some fossil hunting, Badlands is one of the richest deposits in the world, so keep your eyes peeled, and you might just find something interesting (don’t take it though, because it might be illegal).

Another Black Hills must-see is Wind Cave National Park, just a short distance to the south of Badlands. It’s one of most extensive cave systems in the world and is almost 150 miles in length. On a hot summer day, the cool air inside the cave will be quite inviting, making it a pleasure to spend a few hours exploring the stalactites and stalagmites hanging from the ceiling and growing from the cave floor.

Not everyone wants to take a daylong road trip when they get an RV rental in Newcastle, Wyoming though. For those looking for a shorter adventure, there’s Jewel Cave National Monument, just across the border in South Dakota. It’s not as extensive as Wind Cave (though it’s still one of the longest caves in the world), but the crowds should be smaller, and you’ll see many of the same stunning geological features.

RV Parks

While recreational opportunities are bountiful in this part of Wyoming, there aren’t too many RV parks to serve them. The Auto Inn Motel and RV Park on the west end of town is one of the few places that cater to RV travelers. Sites at the park have full hookups, and guests have access to the motel’s laundry facilities. Its proximity to the amenities of the city makes this one of the best options when you get an RV rental in Newcastle. There’s also the Crystal Park Campground on the east side of town, which is little more than a gravel parking lot with electrical hookups. Again, this is a good option for campers who want to stick close to town when getting a motorhome rental in Newcastle.

For a more naturalistic setting, hop over the state line into South Dakota where there are loads of great campgrounds in the Black Hills. One of the closer ones is Echo Valley Park and Campground. Their sites offer access to the campground’s dump station, laundry facilities, and showers. If you’re looking to do some hiking, there are quite a few trails that start right at your campsite.

There’s always the option of setting up the Newcastle travel trailer rental in the Walmart parking lot. You won’t find any amenities there, but it could work for a night or two if you can obtain the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Newcastle is a small town in a state filled with small towns that are far apart, so you’ll need to be creative when searching for attractions that don’t involve enjoying the great outdoors. The Anna Miller Museum is one of the best places to learn about Newcastle’s historical roots as it contains everything from dinosaur bones to Native American artifacts to pioneer-era clothing. While it might seem a bit eclectic at first, with an hour or two of exploring, you’ll get a fairly good sense of the town’s story.

You’ll also find that Newcastle has a pretty good restaurant selection for a town of its size. While none of its eateries stray too far from standard American fare, there are options for all budgets, and a few of them could be considered gourmet.

If you were already taking the Newcastle RV rental into the Black Hills, it’d be a shame to miss its most iconic structure, Mount Rushmore. It can get incredibly crowded during the summer months though, as the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt are a stop for just about anyone passing through on a cross-country road trip.
