At the foot of the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming, the small town of Buffalo remains one of the state’s most active tourism hubs. Although it has historically relied on tourism and agriculture, it has only recently begun to boom thanks to its methane extraction industry which has proven quite lucrative.

Despite its small size, this small ranching town is the seat for all of Johnson County and situated at a major crossroads. Buffalo sits at the junction of Interstates 90 and 25, making it a highly accessible vacation destination and a great place to rent an RV. Nearby mountains and forests promise exciting nature excursions and epic camping, and when you book an RV in Buffalo, you’ll find yourself in a remote area not too far removed from some of the state’s larger population areas such as Casper and Cheyenne.

The Great Outdoors

Wyoming might not have many cities, or people, for that matter, but it is a state of unparalleled natural beauty that you can easily explore when you pick up your Buffalo campervan rental and hit the road. Keyhole State Park is the closest major park to town, surrounding the Keyhole Reservoir. This impoundment of the Belle Fourche River has privately operated marinas, miles of lakefront beaches, fishing areas, swimming spots, and multiple campgrounds when you can stay with the Buffalo camper rental.

Close to Keyhole Reservoir is Devils Tower National Monument, an awe-inspiring natural landmark totaling over 5,000 feet in elevation. The name was given to the site by explorers and westward bound pioneers, yet the native tribes of Wyoming have referred to it as “Bear Lodge” for over 1,000 years. This unique geological feature is truly one of a kind, and great for rock climbing too.

Only a short drive from town, Bighorn National Forest is another place to consider. This epic collection of high mountain peaks, lush forests, geological features, and historic landmarks like Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark make for some great exploration and sightseeing. This dazzling cultural site was a ceremonial site left behind by ancient natives thousands of years ago. You will find a few campgrounds scattered throughout the park.

You cannot ignore the two national parks located in the northwestern corner of the state when you rent an RV in Buffalo, even though it takes a few hours to drive to either one. Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park are stunning wilderness areas teeming with spectacular wildlife and a wide variety of plant species in an area known for biodiversity. Yellowstone National Park is a geologist’s dream, with lots of volcanic activity, natural geysers, and scorching hot springs. Grand Teton National Park is known for its staggering mountain peaks with panoramic views of northern Wyoming, as well as its incredible skiing and snowboarding. No matter where you go, you’ll feel at peace in this outstanding natural wonderland.

RV Parks

Wyoming is an outdoors enthusiast’s wonderland, so campgrounds are located around every corner. Big Horn Mountains Campground could be a nice place to post up for one or more nights, with excellent views of the Big Horn Mountains. In addition to its scenic landscapes, there are tent and RV campsites with lots of space, and restroom/shower facilities.

Lake Stop Resort is an upscale destination with both a motel and an RV campground on the shores of a large lake. There are swimming areas, fishing docks, a swimming pool, and a restaurant when you stay at this lavish campground by the lake.

Sheridan/Big Horn Mountains KOA is a little outside of town. There are fishing opportunities, a mini-golf course, a swimming pool, a dog park, a hot tub, and a sauna.
