Aztalan State Park is a short drive west of the city on I-94, and you’ll find plenty to do in this park that borders the Crawfish River. Visitors can hike in the park’s open prairie, or they can boat, canoe, kayak, and fish in the river. Winter visitors won’t be out of luck here, either, since the park permits cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but keep in mind that the trails here aren’t groomed.

Kettle Moraine State Forest is also nearby, and the Pike Lake entrance is just minutes away in Hartford. At Pike Lake, visitors can spend a day on the water swimming, fishing, canoeing, or kayaking to their heart’s desire. Pike Lake is also an access point for the many hiking and biking trails that run through the forest, including the trail to the top of Powder Hill, which gives visitors fantastic views of the surrounding area. Pike Lake also offers some winter activities, including 2.5 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails as well as snowmobile trails that run through the forest.

For pristine recreation close to the city, check out Nashotah Park. This stunning park features nature trails that lead visitors through a variety of landscapes, including natural lakes, an oak forest, and a floating leaf marsh. Visitors are free to hike and bike through most of the park, and if you have a furry friend with you, the park also has an off-leash dog area. Plus, if you come in the winter, you’ll be able to sled, cross-country ski, and snowshoe on a number of well-maintained trails.
