The vibrant city of Merrill is located east of Eau Claire, just north of Wausau. Merrill was originally founded by European settlers who cleared away the densely forested area to establish a town known as Jenny Bull Falls.

Eventually, a trading post was established in the area by a man called John Faely, who renamed the city Merrill after a former railroad manager named S.S. Merrill. As the city is situated on the Wisconsin River and is close to many significant settlements, it has continued to prosper, and now RV rentals in Merrill are ideal if you're looking to explore central Wisconsin.

Discover Merrill

The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Merrill, you'll be close to plenty of great outdoor activities due to the proximity of the Wisconsin River. One of the best parks you can visit without leaving the city limits is Riverside Park. Situated on the opposite side of the Wisconsin River, this enchanting park covers 22 acres of lush fields and forestry and offers some great activities including a disc golf course, volleyball courts, and picnic shelters. Its location along the Wisconsin River also means you can try your hand at boating, with an on-site boat launch available to the public.

Alternatively, you might want to visit a major state park when you rent a camper in Merrill, in which case plan a visit to Council Grounds State Park. Another riverside park, this state park covers over 500 acres of pine and oak forests along the Wisconsin River and a section of Lake Alexander. This park is very popular for water sports, and favorite activities include boating, swimming, and fishing. Boardwalk trails make hiking around the park a breeze, and avid birdwatchers should make sure to bring along their binoculars to spot some of the rare birds on display, including scarlet tanagers, brown creepers, and many more.

Any angler will have a good time when they rent an RV in Merrill, and another spot for anglers to visit is Prairie River Fishery Area. An ideal place to go if you're looking to explore the Prairie River that runs directly through Merrill, this wildlife area is perfect for wading into the river to find that big trout, pike, or bass you've been waiting to catch. The river is also surrounded by some dense woodlands with a few hiking trails, making this a great place to experience nature too.

RV Parks

While it's a fairly small city, there are still few places to park when you rent an RV in the area. One option to consider is the Council Grounds State Park. The campground here offers over 50 gravel sites. About half of the campsites have electrical hookups that support 30 amp electric, although the other sites have no hookups. Amenities include restrooms and showers, and recreational activities include water sports on the Wisconsin River.

If you'd rather be outside of the city when you rent a motorhome in Merrill, then plan a stop at Otter Lake Recreation Area near Tomahawk. The campground is located near the beautiful Lake Mohawksin and offers a very basic experience with just over 20 campsites and no hookups available. Amenities here are limited to a pit toilet. However, there are plenty of recreational activities with nearby lakes and rivers, giving visitors plenty to do, including fishing, boating, and more.

Exploring the City

When you book an RV in Merrill, you'll have a good base from which to explore the surrounding area, with a few restaurants, shops, and other essentials located within the city. However, you may want to explore neighboring cities while you are here. An enjoyable activity located in nearby Wausau is the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. This museum is world renowned for its art displays which feature birds and is a great day out for the family. It features a sculpture garden, constantly changing art exhibits from local and famous artists, and much more.

Wausau features some intriguing museums, and one way to learn about the history of Wisconsin when you book a camper rental in Merrill is by visiting the Yawkey House Museum. This beautiful building in revivalist architectural style is home to many artifacts and exhibits highlighting the industrialization of Wisconsin and how it developed in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. These exhibits include information on rural electricity, farming methods, and much more. This museum is worth visiting just for the building; with its original fixtures and design elements, it'll feel like you're stepping back in time.

After visiting a few museums, you may want to do something the kids will enjoy, in which case you should look at visiting the indoor waterpark in Rothschild. This 50,000-square-foot waterpark is the perfect family destination regardless of the weather and features a mixture of slides and pools to enjoy. Kids might prefer to stay in the splash pools complete with basketball hoops and balance beams, while adults might want to try out some of the twister slides or just around the indoor lazy river.
