Settled in 1880, Sultan was once a mining town. The settlers and prospectors were lured to this town by the gold rush. The town was named after a local Indian chief, Tseul-ted, but the settlers mispronounced it as “Sultan.” After the local gold mines dried up, the town changed to logging and built several mills. Today, Sultan is a typical quaint small town near the foothills of the Cascades range. The main theme of this town is outdoor recreational activities. Whether you prefer hiking or four-wheeling, this part of state has countless different trails. You won’t ever get bored.

The closest large town is Everett, WA, some 23 miles to the west. Seattle is about 40 miles to the southwest. Leavenworth, a popular tourist destination in the heart of the Washington mountains, is just under 80 miles to the east.

Exploring the Outdoors

When you book a motorhome in Sultan will open up a world of adventures. Sultan is one of the closest towns to the entrance of the Wild Sky Wilderness, a 106,000-acre area in the Cascade Range. This area is one of the closest-to-Seattle rugged wilderness areas you’ll find. Hiking, camping, and fishing are the main activities here. Due to its rough terrain and isolation, some outdoors experience is recommended.

Wallace Falls is one of the better-known waterfalls in Washington State. Though it’s a popular destination for tourists, RV vacationers are able to enjoy the wilderness. The trail winds its way along the Wallace River and up the nine falls. This park is dog-friendly, but they must be leashed. Sections of the trail may be challenging for some dogs and for people with physical difficulties. Bridal Veil Falls is another popular site. Hikers can get into the bottom of the falls -- if they don’t mind getting wet!

For heart-pounding thrills, consider embarking on a whitewater rafting trip on the Skykomish River. There are a handful of guide companies. You’ll start at Big Eddy State Park near Gold Bar, and end your bouncing, wild, wet ride in Sultan. The prime time for a whitewater rafting trip is April till July. Later in the season, the rapids mellow out, making for good kayaking and canoeing trips. There are a number of boat launches along the Wallace and Skykomish rivers. For the avid fishermen, these rivers both are known for producing salmons, steelheads, and trouts.

The Osprey Park in Sultan, though small, is an excellent place to sight eagles, kingfishers, woodpeckers, and yes, ospreys, too. A small footbridge in the park is a very popular spot to watch the spawning salmon in autumn.
