The town of Southworth sits on the Kitsap Peninsula and is primarily known for being one of the ferry terminals connecting Puget Sound’s eastern shore with the Seattle area. The journey across Puget Sound takes less than an hour, but the culture and landscapes on the western shore feel a world away from the bustling metropolis. When you book an RV in Southworth, you’ll have the chance to experience one of the most authentic small towns in the Pacific Northwest.

Besides the ferry terminal, Southworth consists of a residential neighborhood, a small grocery store, and a post office. However, not far from Southworth you’ll find the much larger town of Bremerton, which has considerably more services, shopping, and great places to eat. Southworth also has a ferry to nearby Vashon Island, which only takes a few minutes and leads to a rural landscape populated with farms and vineyards.

The Great Outdoors

The Pacific Northwest is well known for its excellent outdoor opportunities and the Olympic Peninsula has some of the best. When you rent an RV in Southworth, the most obvious place to visit is the Olympic National Park, just a short drive away. It’s one of the most biodiverse parks in the country, particularly the Hoh Rainforest region, one of the few temperate rainforests in North America. There are also dozens of excellent hiking trails crisscrossing the park, many of which can be accomplished in just a few hours.

Closer to Southworth is Blake Island Marine State Park, which can easily be seen from the shores of Southworth. Blake Island can’t be accessed directly by ferry, you’ll need to take one into the Seattle area and then catch a private tour boat back to the park; though you can also kayak there from Southworth if you have the paddling skills. It’s well worth it once you’re there, as the extensive network of trails spreading over the island is complimented with an excellent beachfront for fishing and clamming, and there are even some Native American performances given a few times per year.

For a family picnic near Southworth, there’s Long Lake County Park near Port Orchard. This little green space on the shore of Long Lake is rarely crowded and is perfect for laying on a blanket and just watching the clouds pass overhead.

RV Parks near Southworth

When you choose a motorhome rental in Southworth, one of the closest RV parks is the Gig Harbor RV Resort. They have full hookups for your RV rental, laundry facilities, a playground for the kids, and even a free postal box if you’re staying for a while. Gig Harbor is also one of the most scenic towns on the western shore of Puget Sound and is known as “The Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula”.

For a nature-centered experience with your camper rental in Southworth, check out nearby Manchester State Park, which has a few miles of hiking trails, some historic military buildings, a dump station, and electrical hookups.

If you’re only staying for a few nights, you could also consider camping in the Walmart parking lot in nearby Port Orchard. You won’t have any amenities, but it’s close to major highways and is a short drive from the Seattle-Bremerton ferry. When considering where to fuel up your motorhome rental near Southworth, your best options will probably be in Bremerton, where there are a few service stations large enough to accommodate a large Southworth RV rental.

Exploring the Town of Southworth

There’s not too much to see in Southworth itself, as it’s primarily a quiet residential community. However, its location near Bremerton and just across Puget Sound from Seattle means there’s plenty to do not too far away. If you’re a sports fan, take the ferry into Seattle and catch a game; the Seahawks (football), Mariners (baseball), Sounders (soccer), and even an NHL hockey team all make their home here. Or you can hit up a Kitsap Bluejackets (baseball) game in Bremerton. It’s a great way to spend the day with the family.

If you’re a connoisseur of fine wine, take the ferry over to Vashon Island and experience their vineyards. Most offer tours of their properties along with tastings of their excellent vino.

Visitors interested in military history will want to make a trip to the Puget Sound History Museum in Bremerton. The town is home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, one of the largest maintenance facilities for the U.S. Navy, so it’s no surprise they have some amazing exhibits at the nearby museum. The two-story building is packed with historical documents, interactive exhibits about life aboard a ship, and fantastic documentary videos. Afterward, stop at the USS Turner Joy, a Destroyer-class ship docked nearby that offers tours of its interior.
