Several miles north of Seattle, Washington on Interstate 5, the town of Mountlake Terrace quietly remains a lovely place to visit. Mountlake Terrace used to be an abandoned airfield, but savvy developers stepped in and created the bedroom community in the 1940s to help accommodate the growing population of Seattle. Allegedly, the name Mountlake Terrace refers to the airfield's terrace-like appearance, as well as the nearby Mount Rainier and Lake Washington that are both visible from town.

You can book an RV in Mountlake Terrace and experience an exciting suburb of Seattle, with the ability to easily drive anywhere you would like. The San Juan Islands are reachable by ferry, the elegant coastline of Washington is a short drive to the west, and several impressive towns and cities are located in the immediate vicinity. All of this coupled with the famous evergreen forests and national parks of Washington make Mountlake Terrace an underrated place to visit, and a wonderful place to rent an RV.

The Great Outdoors

Washington is legendary for its epic wilderness areas, with millions and millions of acres dedicated to the preservation of nature and to outdoor recreation for the public. There are three major national parks, several national forests, and hundreds of state parks in Washington, and all of these choices can make your head spin. Saint Edwards State Park might just be the closest to you when you rent an RV in Mountlake Terrace. The park is located in the Seattle metro area on what was once a Catholic seminary. This lovely natural oasis in the middle of the city brings the delights of nature to those that might not be able to get out of the city as often as they would like to and enjoy pleasant strolls on lakefront paths. You can also bicycle around the park beneath the canopy of aging oaks and bigleaf maples, or visit the historic buildings like the old seminary itself. The park also boasts the largest playground in the state which is excellent news for families with small children.

Deception Pass State Park is an interesting place to bring your Mountlake Terrace camper rental to the north if you feel the urge to distance yourself from the big city. The park straddles the Deception Pass waterway between Fidalgo Island and Whidbey Island, which are connected by one of the most iconic bridges in the Pacific Northwest. On the south side of the park, there is a fantastic camping area that can provide you with refuge overnight when you rent an RV and need a place to stay. Two million people visit this incredible park each year to see the landmark bridge as well as its stellar coastlines on the Puget Sound.

When you rent an RV anywhere in the Seattle metro area, you have the good fortune to find yourself within driving distance of a few national parks that will blow you away should you take the time to visit them. Olympic National Park can be found by driving south through Tacoma and Olympia and around to the peninsula on the other side of the Puget Sound. This natural masterpiece has massive snow-capped mountains that are visible from Seattle, shielded from the outside world by layers of the thick, temperate rainforest. The rugged coastlines are a pleasure to explore and comb for exciting driftwood and beautiful seashells, and there are plenty of campgrounds located throughout the parks many different ecosystems. Mount Rainier National Park is southeast of Seattle and is home to the largest stratovolcano in the region. This hulking giant is visible from far and wide due to its prominence and sheer size. Thousands of people attempt to summit Mount Rainier with less than half succeeding due to treacherous climbs and unfriendly weather. There are gorgeous subalpine meadows with flowers of every color imaginable, and some of the oldest and largest glaciers in the country. Like any national park, there are plenty of places to park and camp out in your Mountlake Terrace RV rental.

RV Friendly

Washington is full of campgrounds and RV parks due to its affinity for the great outdoors, and the Seattle metro area is perhaps the best place to rent an RV for that very reason. Twin Cedars RV Park is close to town over in Lynnwood and is both easy to find and surrounded by restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Lakeside RV Park is also walking distance from many of the local restaurants and malls near Seattle. There is a large fishing lake and over 100 awesome camping spots to choose from. Lake Pleasant RV Park is a tranquil, relaxing destination to stay for a night or two. Treed, spacious, quiet camping spots circle the lake, providing some peace and privacy. Fishing at the campground is allowed and hiking on its many nature trails is encouraged.

Thunderbird RV Camping Resort is farther outside of the city but can provide an immersive experience. It has a clubhouse, mini-golf, playgrounds, sports courts & fields, a pool, and countless other amenities to take advantage of.

City Attractions

One of the best parts about visiting Mountlake Terrace, or any suburb of Seattle for that matter, is the ease of access to the large city and all that comes with the territory. Mountlake Terrace isn’t known for its nightlife or attractions, but there is a wealth of places to keep you occupied and happy if you head into the city. Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum is great for military and aviation buffs, with a massive collection of airplanes and armored vehicles on site. There are even airshows from time to time where gifted pilots showcase the wonders of modern engineering by dipping and twirling through the sky for all to see.

Pikes Place Market is one of the largest and most enjoyable farmers' markets in the country, where you can buy fresh fish, produce, or artisan crafts. This well-known market is open most days of the year and is located right on the waterfront of downtown Seattle. Cascadia Art Museum might be small but it sure has a way of captivating the hearts of its patrons. There is a lot of locally made art and art from Alaska hanging on the walls of the museum, with some focus on indigenous artwork too.

Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum is an unusual sounding place, but it's worth a visit when in town. The entire facility is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Dale Chihuly, an eccentric artist who worked primarily with glass blowing techniques to create masterful, intricate oddities. These bizarre glass sculptures are a pleasure to view, especially outdoors in the splendid garden.
