First platted in 1870, Montesano, Washington, is a moderately-sized town between Aberdeen and Olympia. This lovely community serves as the county seat for all of Grays Harbor County. Once named Medcalf Prairie after William Medcalf, the town would eventually become incorporated as Montesano in 1883. The name Montesano roughly means “mountain of health” and was chosen in favor of Mount Zion, a proposed name by the town’s religious population.

Montesano is a gorgeous green community with fabulous landscapes and quaint historic buildings. The natural beauty of the surrounding countryside coupled with the stunning Washington coastline makes for fantastic camping when you book an RV in Montesano. When you take into consideration how easy it is to drive to places like Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle, Montesano seems like an excellent place to rent an RV for a variety of reasons.

Discover Montesano

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Washington is often heralded for its immense natural beauty and when you rent an RV in Montesano, you’ll see that the town is no exception. You don’t even have to leave Montesano to find Lake Sylvia State Park, an incredible little natural area teeming with wildlife. The park consists of dense, temperate rainforest centered around a small lake that is ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, and much more. There are even campgrounds beside the lake where you can camp when you rent an RV in Montesano and feel like staying close to town.

Out on the Pacific Coast, Westport Light State Park is a viable option to take into consideration. This enchanting shoreline park has magnificent beaches you can comb for interesting driftwood and seashells while relishing the views at sunset. Lounging on the beach, sun tanning, reading a book, birdwatching, and, of course, swimming are excellent ways to utilize the park, and you can even tour Washington’s tallest lighthouse, Grays Harbor Lighthouse.

Griffiths-Priday State Park can also be found on the oceanside, albeit a little farther north. Towering sand dunes protect the hidden beach coves of the park and there are lots of fun trails to hike or bike. You can go fishing or clam digging when you bring your Montesano RV rental for a day trip and if you are lucky, you can even see the amazing gray whales on their migratory route offshore.

One of the most impressive natural features in all of Washington can be found less than an hour’s drive north of Montesano, on the Olympic Peninsula. Olympic National Park is by far one of the most impressive parks in the United States, with rugged coastline, temperate rainforests, and imposing mountains. The park is even known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bringing in well over three million people per year. You can tour the wilderness areas of the park on a network of well-maintained trails and camp out at one of its many campgrounds in the comfort of your Montesano motorhome rental.

Where to Park It

As far as camping is concerned, there are a few places to rest with your camper rental near Montesano. Artic RV Park has spacious campsites and its own pub. You can even hold events or weddings on the premises. Hoquiam River RV Park is a short walk from several local attractions and has its own boat launches, community spaces, fishing areas, and a large clubhouse.

Bayshore RV Park can be found along the bay, with jaw-dropping views, particularly at sunset. The pet-friendly park has walking areas for pet owners, along with beaches, swimming areas, and a cooling sea breeze.

Travel Inn RV Resort is another option, with an in-ground pool, sports courts, playing fields, and a community fire pit for gatherings. The RV resort is located close to state parks and many other local points of interest.

City Attractions

The city of Montesano isn’t exactly known for a bustling city center with amazing attractions but you will find there are a few things worth checking out while you rent an RV in town. The Grays Harbor Courthouse is an absolute work of art that should be appreciated up close and personally during your trip. This three-story building, with a domed clock tower and Greek columns, is one of the prettiest buildings in the region and has been operational since it was built in 1911.

In Hoquiam, you can see the Polson Museum, an interesting institution with lots of exhibits and artifacts on display. The history of the logging industry, native indigenous people, and the first settlers are all explained in great detail by knowledgeable staff members.

Over in Aberdeen, you can hop aboard the Lady Washington, a gorgeous old ship that has been featured in countless movie and television productions. This old ship truly makes you feel as if you have fallen back in time, and coastal cruises in it are unbelievably memorable.
