Way, way up north near Washington State’s border with Canada, is the small community of Maple Falls. This tiny town is home to a few hundred residents but is hardly known as a major tourist destination. Maple Falls was first settled by homesteaders from Canada, like Herbert Everett Leavitt who went on to operate some of the first businesses in town, like a blacksmith shop, a restaurant, and two hotels.

Since its first settlements, Maple Falls has largely remained unchanged by time. This peaceful enclave in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains operates as a sort of gateway to Washington’s jaw-dropping scenery, so most of the tourism in the area is related to its limitless potential as an outdoor vacation destination. When you book an RV in Maple Falls, you are actually closer to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada as the crow flies, but Seattle is only a few hours’ drive south. When you pick up your Maple Falls camper rental, you have practically nothing stopping you from touring the region or even dipping into Canada for some international sightseeing.

Discover Maple Falls

The Great Outdoors

There's no need to be concerned with the particulars when it comes to planning your Maple Falls RV rental trip; there are a whole host of parks and recreation areas to consider visiting while in town. Silver Lake Park is north of town, sandwiched between Maple Falls and the Canadian border, and comes complete with campgrounds, rental cabins, and hiking paths. You can boat around in the water, go fishing for dinner, or take a swim in the refreshing waters of Silver Lake when you need to cool off.

To the east in the Cascade Mountains, you can bring your Maple Falls motorhome rental to see Ross Lake National Recreation Area, an unimaginably beautiful place to camp beside the lake and take in some stellar sunsets. The park is found in what is often referred to as the “American Alps,” home to Ross Lake, a massive lake that spans the border of two countries. Hunting, canoeing, kayak, motorboating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and camping are the normal options available to tourists, and deluxe views of the Cascade Mountains make the experience a memorable one.

Speaking of the Cascades, North Cascades National Park is directly next door to Ross Lake National Recreation Area, combining together to make a sprawling wilderness spanning well over a million acres. Due to its remote location, it remains clear of the usual tourist crowds. Majestic towering mountains account for a good deal of the park, with rugged canyons, steep climbs, and treacherous rocky gorges at every turn. No two areas of this fascinating park are the same, so be prepared to stay on your toes when you rent an RV in Maple Falls and head to this scenic land expanse.

RV Friendly

There are a handful of places to park the camper rental near Maple Falls. The Douglas Fir Campground is just a short drive from town, nestled along the North Fork Nooksack River. Sites are primitive here with no access to hookups, though there are vault toilets and picnic tables throughout the grounds. Hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing are favorite pastimes at this natural campground, and there is easy access to the numerous features to observe within Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

Silver Lake Park also has a campground on site, so you can stay for a few days while enjoying the outdoor recreation opportunities that this lakeside park provides.

Sumas RV Park and Campground is just south of the Canadian border. This park offers sites with full hookups, and some sites have pull-through access. The park is a short drive from the city of Sumas, where there are a few restaurants and retail stores.

City Attractions

Apart from the usual businesses, restaurants, and shops in town, there are some interesting places to check out while in town. There are even specialty vineyards and wineries to see. You can taste test the wineries' blends year-round, and savor wine that has been continuously brewed for decades.

Mt. Baker Ski Area is a fantastic locally-maintained mountain with snowboarding and skiing trails. There are sublime snowy peaks, deep crevices, and the wooded trails make for some amazing wintertime recreation when you have the time and energy to stop in town and stay a bit longer.

In Bellingham to the west, you’ll also be able to find some sweet features, like a farmer’s market selling fresh produce, with tons of art pieces, artisan goods, and other treasures. You can bring your dog to this pet-friendly market and interact with the farmers who grow the food. Don’t forget to stroll through the Fairhaven Historic District, full of original buildings from the town’s first years.
