Originally named Brooklyn, the town changed its name to Manchester in 1892 as a nod to Manchester, England. The ferry service between Seattle and the Hood Canal area was originally established in Manchester. However, in 1936, the dock was washed away in a storm, and they never resumed services. Today’s residents and visitors have the option of using the nearby Southworth or Bremerton towns’ ferry services to transfer to Seattle. Manchester is blessed with terrific views of the Puget Sound, the Seattle skyline, and Mount Rainier. Bicyclists can enjoy the views along the nonstop route between Southworth Ferry and Port Orchard.
The largest town is Seattle, which is about 20 miles across the Puget Sound. The ferry transit time varies depending on the weather; it typically takes about 40-50 minutes, including the time to load vehicles onto a ferry. When you rent a luxury motorhome in Manchester, you’ll likely want to head to the world-famous Olympic National Park. Distance to the park varies depending on where exactly you’re heading to. Expect anywhere between 60 miles to well over 100 miles. In contrast, visiting the closest Puget Sound beach, the Pomeroy Park, is only minutes away. Watch the ferries go by, launch your boat at the public docks, and stretch your legs here.

Hundreds of easy-access trailheads through a massive rainforest and freshwater lakes are yours for choosing. Visit lush meadows, discover hidden swimming holes, and search for rare wildlife.
Thousands of species of fish, marine mammals, clams, and mussels make their home in the nearby Hood Canal. Trout in spring, shrimp and crab in summers, and saltwater coho in fall and winter. It’s a fisherman’s dream.
The Manchester State Park has a few miles of gentle trails, guiding you past historic sites of former torpedo warehouse built in late 1800s and the Middle Point fort. Kayaking, swimming, fishing, and diving are all possible along the coastlines of this park. Watch for red-winged blackbirds, kingfishers, herons, hawks, and other elusive birds.
The Hall Hill Labyrinth is one of the hidden gems in the Bainbridge area. It’s difficult to find, which is by design. This labyrinth is intended to be a meditative experience, and it’s customary to leave an offering at the center when you complete your journey through the labyrinth.
When you rent a travel trailer in Manchester, you’ll need to park it somewhere for a few days. The Manchester State Park, a small 111-acre park, allows RVs and has hookups, showers, and bathrooms. Space is limited, particularly in summers; call ahead to reserve.
Alternatively, consider the Stagecoach Mobile and RV Park in Bremerton. They offer full hookups and laundry facilities. However, they have only weekly and monthly rates.
For more amenities and greater flexibility in scheduling, the Tahuya Adventure Resort may be a good option. Located in Belfair, it’s a little over 20 miles from Manchester. This resort offers full hookups, wifi, a community kitchen, and horse and ATV rentals. It’s also close to a number of hiking trails.
Should you need to stop somewhere overnight in a pinch, there are a few Walmarts in the area. The closest is in Port Orchard. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission, though!
There’s plenty of things to see and do here on this side of the Puget Sound. Start with a boat sightseeing tour of the harbor, which will give you some historical context of waterfront and fantastic views of the Seattle skyline, Mt. Rainier. You might even luck out and spot an Orca or two, which have been known to visit the Puget Sound.
Alternatively, visit one of the many museums in the area. The Sidney Museum and Art Gallery in Port Orchard is dedicated to preserving the local history and promoting arts. If you’re seeking “quirky,” for which Seattle is famous, check out the Bug Museum in Bremerton. As the name suggests, the museum showcases hundreds of different bugs, and has several live species on site, including an eight-foot-long ant farm. The Valentinetti Puppet Museum features puppets made by master craftsmen and artists.
For a dose of military history, visit the USS Turner Joy Museum Ship, the Puget Sound Navy Museum, and the Bainbridge Island Japanese-American Exclusion Memorial. There are several other options in the area.
One of the few remaining drive-in theaters in the country is found in Bremerton. It offers three screens and has a capacity of 1,000 cars. Note, it is open only in summers.
