Lummi Island is one of the most accessible of Puget Sound’s islands. A single ferry that departs from Gooseberry Point only takes a few minutes to traverse the channel between the island and the mainland. Once you’re there, you’ll find a bucolic artist community that feels a world away from some of the more tourist-heavy islands in the area. Book an RV in Lummi Island and you’ll have the chance to experience a real off-the-beaten-path island destination.

One thing to note when choosing a travel trailer rental in Lummi Island is that most of the island is private property. There are few boat ramps or public beaches to speak of, so it pays to plan your trip carefully. Know where you’ll be staying each night and the activities of the day; winging your travel plans on this small island probably won’t lead to the best results.

Discover Lummi Island

The Great Outdoors

As much of the island is private property, it can also be a bit challenging to find a wide variety of outdoor recreation when you get a camper rental in Lummi Island. The southern end of the island is completely forested, but it can be difficult to reach as no public roads access it. Instead, you’ll need to rent a kayak and paddle along the shoreline to reach the isolated stretch of wilderness. Once you’re there though, you’ll probably have the place to yourself.

Sunset Beach on the island’s northwestern edge is probably the best stretch of sand that’s open to the public. There’s not much in the way of facilities beyond a small parking lot, but if you want some wonderful views of Rosario Strait as the sun dips below the horizon, this is the place to go when you rent an RV.

For some really big adventures, consider taking a day trip to North Cascades National Park on the mainland. It’s most well known for Desolation Peak, where Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac worked as a fire lookout and penned his book Desolation Angels. However, it’s also one of the least visited parks in the national park system, despite its location near outdoor-obsessed Seattle. This is partially due to the sheer difficulty and remoteness of some of its terrain, but a number of shorter/easier trails can be found on its western edge.

RV Parks near Lummi Island

There are no RV parks on the island itself, but there are several on the mainland close by. Bellingham RV Park is one of the closest options, being just minutes from the ferry terminal. The park has full hookups, laundry facilities, a library, and complimentary coffee and cookies. Another option is Lighthouse by the Bay RV Resort, which is just a short drive up Interstate 5 and has some fantastic views of Puget Sound. The park has full hookups for your Lummi Island RV rental, showers, laundry facilities, and a rec room. If you were thinking about spending any time north of the border in Vancouver, this would be a convenient location for camping.

For a more rustic experience when you choose a motorhome rental in Lummi Island, head south to Larrabee State Park Campground. Sites are pretty basic, but you will have access to some excellent hiking in the adjacent parkland. Additionally, you could ask for manager permission to camp in the Bellingham Walmart parking lot when you get an RV rental in Lummi Island. You’ll need to be self-sufficient, as there won’t be any hookups in the parking lot, but it’s not a bad option for short stays.

Exploring the Town of Lummi Island

While Lummi Island doesn’t have the tourist infrastructure that’s present on some of the nearby San Juan Islands, there’s still plenty to do here if you keep an open mind. If you’d like to get out on the water, consider chartering a sailboat or renting a kayak. While exploring in your RV rental can be a lot of fun, to really get to know the island you may want to switch over to two wheels; renting a bicycle is the perfect way to see Lummi Island.

While it might seem like a bit of an unorthodox tourist attraction, it’s well worth stopping by the Lummi Public Library. It’s not very big, but it’s fun to browse through the books thinking about which ones you might enjoy reading as you lounge on the beach later.

When it comes to dining options, Lummi Island doesn’t have more than a handful. However, one thing you can count on is for all of them to be serving fresh seafood, and most have fantastic views over Puget Sound. And for shopping, there are a few gift shops and galleries toward the center of the island where you can pick up some interesting nautical memorabilia to remind you of your travels.
