La Connor is a lovely little fishing village on the northern edges of Puget Sound. It’s frequently listed as one of the best getaways and romantic destinations for Washingtonians as its downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and its home to the annual Tulip Festival.

If you would like to go exploring the nearby San Juan Islands when you book an RV in La Connor, the Washington State Ferry travels from Anacortes to Friday Harbor and Orcas Island. To get down to Seattle though, it’s best to use public transportation; buses leave from Mount Vernon a few times per day and even though it will take longer to get there, it’s much more pleasant than trying to find parking there when you rent an RV.

The Great Outdoors

Kukutali Preserve is just outside La Connor on a small peninsula jutted out into Similk Bay. The preserve’s trails are all relatively short and flat walks along the beachfront, but they are perfect for exploring the tidal ecosystem. Wander around, examine the shells and driftwood that populate the gravel coast, but leave everything where you found it so the next visitor can enjoy the same experience.

Deception Pass State Park is only a short distance from La Connor and encompasses some spectacular cliffs overlooking Puget Sound. If you want to get out on the water, rent a kayak from one of the sporting goods stores in Mount Vernon or Anacortes and start paddling the coastline. Just be careful, as the currents can be pretty strong here.

If you loving hiking and want to climb some peaks when you choose a travel trailer rental in La Connor, make sure to take a least one day trip to North Cascades National Park. Trails there access some of the most remote wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest, and it sees relatively few tourists, so you might have the trail all to yourself. If you’d just like to see some beautiful landscapes without all the effort of hiking, State Route 20 runs right through the park and makes for a wonderful scenic drive.

It’s also not far from the town of Anacortes and the Washington State Ferry terminal.

Another option when you choose an RV rental in La Conner is to camp in the Walmart parking lot in Mount Vernon. You won’t have any amenities, but with manager permission, it’s not a bad place to stay for a night or two. Exploring the Town of La Connor

The most important annual event in La Connor is the Tulip Festival. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival brings in thousands of tourists every year to see the vast fields of these beautiful flowers bursting forth with color in the area northeast of La Connor. The festival stands as a celebration of Skagit County’s agricultural prowess while also welcoming the spring season and warmer temperatures.

Although La Connor's history as a fishing town is filled with gruff sailors, today the community is better known for its art scene. The Museum of Northwest Art, right in the center of La Connor has some of the most beautiful examples of indigenous art from several of the region’s tribes. There are also quite a few galleries along the downtown riverfront if you’re looking for a piece to take home.

The Norwester Museum is also worth a visit if you love offbeat tourist attractions. It’s actually housed inside a yacht – John Wayne’s yacht. The museum is full of items owned by the famed Hollywood actor and props from his movies. If you’re a fan of “the Duke”, you’ll definitely want to peruse this floating museum. There’s also the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fibers Museum, which has new exhibits every month showcasing some of the best in textile arts from the region.
