One hundred miles north of Seattle in the Puget Sound, there is a collection of incredible islands between the mainland and Canada’s Vancouver Island. San Juan Island is one of the largest and most beloved of these islands, and Friday Harbor is the main commercial hub of the San Juan Islands archipelago. This incredible coastal village is as gorgeous as it is vital to the local people, serving as a main point of entry from the mainland.

The town was first settled in the middle of the 19th century and was mostly known for curing salmon and sheep farming. The waters around the island are bountiful so Friday Harbor has also developed a reputation for fishing and world-class seafood. The San Juan Islands’ only incorporated town is only reachable from the mainland by ferries from Anacortes and Sidney in British Columbia, or by seaplane. When you book an RV in Friday Harbor, it might not be ideal for road trips due to its location on an island, but it does enable you to tour the large island and enjoy the exceptional scenery and spectacular sunsets over the Puget Sound.

Discover Friday Harbor

The Great Outdoors

Washington is often referred to as a place of divine beauty, with incredible evergreen forests and magnificent mountains. Even the San Juan Islands in the Puget Sound are each little hidden paradises existing in their own world. Lime Kiln Point State Park is a tiny nature refuge on the far side of the island from Friday Harbor, but easy to drive to when you rent an RV in town. The park is small compared to most other state parks but is one of the very best places on the planet to observe pods of wild orca whales in nature. You can also scour the shores for seashells, have a picnic on the coast, hike, or tour the old lighthouse at the park. On neighboring Orcas Island, Moran State Park holds over 5,000 majestic acres to explore. The park is the largest recreation area in the San Juan Islands, as well as one of the largest in Washington. You can hike, mountain bike, or ride horses through more than 30 miles of trails, some of which lead to the top of Mount Constitution, the highest point on any of the islands. The observation deck at the top of the peak has extraordinary views of the Puget Sound and beyond. Additionally, there are lots of hidden waterfalls to find at Moran State Park and several year-round campgrounds for you to use when you rent an RV in Friday Harbor.

On the mainland near Anacortes, Deception Pass State Park is yet another fabulous addition to the state’s park system. The park is one of the most popular in all of Washington with two million visitors flooding into the park annually. What was once a large military reserve is now an incredible wilderness area with amazing beaches, tidal pools, rugged shores, and coniferous forests overlooking the water. One noteworthy feature of the park is its amazing scuba diving, but the waters of Deception Pass can be treacherous so it is only recommended for experts. When you bring your Friday Harbor RV rental to Deception Pass, there are also boat launches, ample space to fish, and a fantastic interpretive center that educates park guests on the park and its wildlife.

While you find yourself on the mainland, you can head east to North Cascades National Park, a place of untold beauty. Together with the national forests and recreation areas included, there is a seemingly infinite amount of untouched wilderness waiting for you when you bring your Friday Harbor camper rental to the US-Canadian border where North Cascades National Park is located. The mighty mountain peaks of the park are excellent for photographing, and great for mountaineering too. There are dozens of campgrounds for you to visit with your Friday Harbor RV rental if you feel as though you need a few days more to enjoy the park.

RV Friendly

There are a limited number of camping spots that can accommodate your Friday Harbor motorhome rental while you visit the island, but there are still options. Lakedale Resort is a few miles out of town and has a store and a cafe on site, and stunning views of the water. La Conner RV Park and Camping Resort on the mainland is an option too and is quite close to the ferry terminal. There are waterfront camping sites, a clubhouse, a restaurant, and a store at this park.

Fidalgo Bay Resort also has waterfront camping with spacious campsites for you and your Friday Harbor camper rental. There are lots of other options on the mainland so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one off of the islands.

City Attractions

It may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but this remote village in the islands is quite an interesting place to visit. The town is small but packed with lots of fun things to do. Seafood restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and trendy shops line the streets of downtown Friday Harbor, and several area attractions await you when you arrive in town and rent an RV. The Whale Museum has been in operation since 1979, teaching generations of people about the stoic creatures of the ocean. The museum promotes the preservation of ocean creatures and the environment in which they live. There are incredible exhibits and massive whale skeletons for people to observe. The San Juan Islands Museum of Art oozes culture, with contemporary art, art created by locals, and of course, the iconic indigenous art from the Salish people and other regional tribes.

San Juan Island Farmers Market, like any small-town farmers market, is a wonderful way to truly get a feel for the local culture. You can buy fresh produce, artisan food, or locally sourced souvenirs and art at this lovely little market.

The San Juan Historical Society and Museum is home to a wealth of historical artifacts, old photographs, and knowledgeable tour guides that lovingly study their local history to share it with the world. The history of the island and its neighbors is truly fascinating and the museum does not disappoint.
