Nestled up against the Connecticut River which divides New Hampshire and Vermont, Putney is a tiny hamlet with a few thousand full-time residents. This picturesque New England town is reminiscent of a painting, with old churches, covered bridges, colonial style homes, and mountains looming in the distance.

Putney was first settled after permission was granted by the King of England following the French and Indian War in 1760, led by Colonel Josiah Willard. Due to its lack of water power, Putney was not an ideal place to build river mills and was thus left behind after the Industrial Revolution took hold. From that point onward, Putney has largely retained its rural village atmosphere.

When you book an RV in Putney, you can conveniently get to and from town using Interstate 91. Putney is located approximately halfway between Springfield, Massachusetts and Montpelier, the state capital of Vermont.

The Great Outdoors

Vermont is one of the smallest states in the Union, as well as one of the least densely populated, so an overwhelming majority of the state’s land is uninhabited and suitable for hiking and camping. When you rent an RV in Putney, there are dozens of excellent forests and parks nearby that you can check out during your trip. Molly Stark State Park, named for Revolutionary War hero and wife of General John Stark, is an ideal place to bring your Putney RV rental by owner. This densely forested wonderland is full of wildlife, and great for hiking, mountain biking, photography, and picnicking. Camping is also an option whether you have an RV or a tent.

Just over the border in New Hampshire, there are several excellent parks like Pisgah State Park and Monadnock State Park. Pisgah State Park is one of New Hampshire’s largest parks, with six different trailheads demarcating the start of its complex network of nature trails. These trails can be used for hiking, biking, off-roading, ATV riding, and snowmobiling too. On top of that, there are old-growth forest groves and delightful fishing ponds throughout the park. Monadnock State Park is on the other side of Keene, named for Mount Monadnock. This 3,000-foot-tall mountain is considered a National Natural Landmark for its peculiar appearance and prominence. The mountain is a great place for hiking and rock climbing, but you can also go backpacking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or camping with your Putney motorhome rental.

Back on the Vermont side of the state line, Green Mountain National Forest is the largest nature park in the state, with eight different wilderness areas and around 400,000 acres of land. You can camp out in the forest using your Putney RV rental, trek through the woods, hike part of the famous Appalachian Trail, or snowshoe and cross-country ski in the winter time. Speaking of wintertime, some of the state’s best and most well-known ski and snowboarding resorts are located in the national forest.

RV Friendly

When planning your Putney vacation, you may need to find a place to camp. Kenolie Village Campground is a suitable place to stay the night, with family-friendly vibes and a whole lot of space. There are picnic facilities, shuffleboard courts, volleyball courts, pet walking areas, and a camp store.

Kampfires Campground is just north of Brattleboro, with its own bed and breakfast, mini-golf course, peaceful campground, swimming pool, ice cream shop, and camp store. There are lots of live events, music concerts, and other gatherings held at the park, so you’ll never have a dull moment.

Brattleboro North KOA is close to Kampfires Campground, with many of the same amenities. There is a camp store with ice, propane, and groceries, and a dog park for pet owners too. You can also have a family game night in the game room or cool off in the pool during the summer.

City Attractions

One thing to remember when you rent an RV in Putney is that it is not a big city. There are still plenty of activities to enjoy here though, including golfing, picking apples at one of the many orchards, learning to tap maple trees for syrup, or sampling wine at one of the nearby wineries. The town is quaint and full of bed and breakfasts in typical New England fashion, and the most spectacular attractions in the area usually revolve around the changing of the seasons and the great beauty of nature. Santa’s Land USA is a quirky theme park that children seem to enjoy, with lots of rides, gift shops, tasty treats, and a whole bunch of nostalgia.

Westmoreland Park Hill Meeting House & Historical Society is close to town, although not technically in Vermont. This amazing facility in New Hampshire serves to protect and preserve the old historical landmarks of southern New Hampshire, many of which have been around since the founding of the United States. The Park Hill Meeting House and the Corner Schoolhouse personify New England with iconic architecture and style.

When in Vermont during the winter, it is always a fantastic idea to hit the slopes. There are dozens of awesome mountain resorts in the state, like Mount Snow, Stratton, Okemo, and many more. These mountains drive tourism in the winter, and even if you don’t ski or snowboard, there is lots to do, including snowmobiling, tubing, attending music festivals and other celebrations, and dining at elegant restaurants overlooking the slopes. Most of these mountains are operational in the summertime too for those who enjoy mountain biking.
