Discover Bennington

The Great Outdoors

Vermont is a state full of amazing outdoor activities, and hiking opportunities abound, but none are quite as impressive as the Long Trail, America’s first long-distance trail (predating the Appalachian by seven years). It stretches for over 270 miles from Vermont’s border with Massachusetts and the town of North Adams all the way to Canada along the spine of the Green Mountains.

There’s also the Molly Stark Trail, a 40-mile-long scenic drive between Bennington and Brattleboro, where you can experience all the Green Mountains’ beauty from the comfort of your air-conditioned vehicle. The leaves transform into their brilliant orange and golden colors a bit earlier in southern Vermont, so be sure to plan ahead if you’re thinking of leaf peeping the Molly Stark.

For a quick hike when you get an RV rental in Bennington, VT, you can’t do much better than Harmon Hill, a few miles outside of town and just off the Molly Stark Trail. The path is only a couple miles long and can be accomplished in an hour or two, but it can be a bit challenging if you’re not used to steep hikes. However, you’ll be handsomely rewarded for your efforts with spectacular views of the Green Mountains.

RV Parks

The rounded peaks of the Green Mountains sit just outside of Bennington and make for an excellent camping experience. One of the closest places to camp, when you choose an RV rental in Bennington, is Pine Hollow Campground a short distance down Highway 7. Not only does it have an absolutely beautiful setting, but also full hookups, paddleboat rentals for use on a nearby pond, a dump station, hot showers, and some excellent trout fishing. If you’re looking for a place to camp with lots of amenities when you choose a camper rental in Bennington, this could be an excellent choice.

For a more rustic experience, check out Woodford State Park just outside the town of Woodford; the park’s campground has several dozen sites, none of which have hookups. There are hot showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station so you wouldn’t be completely roughing it. However, most people choose the campground for the dense forests surrounding it, which have loads of potential for interested hikers.

Another amenity-free option when you get a motorhome rental in Bennington is Greenwood Lodge and Campground, which is just down the road from the Woodford State Park. They do have some sites with water and electricity, but the majority of them have no hookups at all. However, the park does have a dump station and hot showers. Consider section hiking a bit of the Long Trail when you camp here, as it’s not too far away.

Exploring the City

To get a sense of Bennington’s history and culture, start your tour of the town at the Bennington Museum. For a small town museum, it’s packed full of beautiful exhibits - everything from vintage cars, 19th-century pottery artwork, and artifacts from the Revolutionary War‘s Battle of Bennington. Speaking of which, you’ll definitely want to take the hike up to the nearby Bennington Battle Monument on the hill above the museum. The 300-foot-tall obelisk looks quite similar to the Washington Monument in D.C. and has an elevator that takes visitors up for the best views in Bennington.

For a fun night out when you get a travel trailer rental in Bennington, check out the schedule of events at the Oldcastle Theatre. Their biggest performances are during the summer, but there are a variety of small shows in the off-season including improv, stand-up comedy, and musical acts.

No trip to Vermont’s countryside would be complete without seeing some of the state’s famous covered bridges though. There are five of them within a short drive of Bennington, so mark them out on a map and make a day of photographing and posing with these iconic structures.
