Vermont is a state full of amazing outdoor activities, and hiking opportunities abound, but none are quite as impressive as the Long Trail, America’s first long-distance trail (predating the Appalachian by seven years). It stretches for over 270 miles from Vermont’s border with Massachusetts and the town of North Adams all the way to Canada along the spine of the Green Mountains.

However, most people choose the campground for the dense forests surrounding it, which have loads of potential for interested hikers.

They do have some sites with water and electricity, but the majority of them have no hookups at all. However, the park does have a dump station and hot showers. Consider section hiking a bit of the Long Trail when you camp here, as it’s not too far away.

To get a sense of Bennington’s history and culture, start your tour of the town at the Bennington Museum. For a small town museum, it’s packed full of beautiful exhibits - everything from vintage cars, 19th-century pottery artwork, and artifacts from the Revolutionary War‘s Battle of Bennington. Speaking of which, you’ll definitely want to take the hike up to the nearby Bennington Battle Monument on the hill above the museum. The 300-foot-tall obelisk looks quite similar to the Washington Monument in D.C. and has an elevator that takes visitors up for the best views in Bennington.
